Default RIP: Jon Sholle, Guitarist with DGQ in the 1980s

I'm sorry to report the passing of Jon Sholle. Around here, he may be best known as a member of the David Grisman Quintet in the 1980s. I was working at Rounder Records when his album Catfish For Supper came out (1979?!?) and fell in love with it right away.

Years later, I had the chance to meet and hang out when I was hired to photograph the recording of Andy Statman's 'Old Brooklyn'. What a great and talented guy.

Here's a nice photo from that 2008 session.

Jon was a great guitarist and a dear friend. We met in the early 60s when he was the prevailing flat-picking wunderkind of the NYC bluegrass scene. He truly brought the funk/rhythm & blues into my band with his infectious, soulful playing. We always kept in touch through the years, particularly this past year when he was ill. My heart goes out to his wife, Betty and son, Evan. Rest in peace Jonathan T.

Loved Catfish for Supper. A long deceased friend and I used to play a number of those tunes...

I just found out. He was my favorite guitarist. He was also a great mandolin player.
I met him at the Bottom Line. I saw him play a duet with Rob Wasserman where they both looked at each other and did not look at their instruments.
Loved the stuff he did with Dawg and Andy Statman.
