Thumbs up Big Muddy Mandolins mini documentary.

Never seen this posted before and thought some might enjoy. Looks like a cool operation Mike has going there. I didn't realize he put finish on the inside of his instruments till now. I don't own one, but I'm a big fan of Mike's work.

I enjoyed seeing the work as it progressed in the assembly a would like to own a Big Muddy. The mandolin playing the sound track is out of tune to my ears and I suggest turning the sound down if this bothers you also.

That exact model was my very first mandolin. The DEA should officially declare it a gateway drug.

It’s my reintroduction instrument. I sold my Gibson 2 years ago and have regretted it so I decided a good flat top would help me get back to where i was.

It was my introduction instrument. Three other good flattops came next (a Flatiron, Gypsy, and Redline). The Gibson (and others) have followed.

Just got an MW-0 this year. Have owned a couple in the very remote past. Like the design and sound. It's my go to instrument at home and also my travel mandolin. In fact, used it yesterday at a gig where the temperature was sitting in the upper 40's. Didn't like the sound coming from my OM so got this one out instead and everything seemed much better.

Love my Mid-Missouri spruce-and-rosewood axe. Warm, fat, loud, easy to play, and oh-so-cool-looking!

I am not rich but dearly wish for a flat top mandolin. If his prices hold another two months, I am going to snag one.

I played 2 at Carter's last month and really liked them... I may spring for one before too long!

If I am able to manage to obtain a Muddy, the only one I have a shot at is a Mini - Mo. What are the general feelings of this one? I have an Eastman 305 and a Rover RM50. Would I be wasting money on this one or not? I could be pretty easily persuaded to give up the Rover to amortize the purchase, but I don't have any illusions about what I would get for it.

Flat top Mandos have a very different sound than both your Eastman and Rover. Both of your mandolins are arched top ff hole instrument and flat top as well as round hole will generate a very different tonal quality, which can be guitar like. They don't chop very well, but are really nice open chord and melody machines. Great for "Celtic" music.

For a short time I owned a Flatiron 1N which is very similar. It was awesome and sounded great, but at the time, it was not the sound for me, but as "my collection grows" I may get one for more tonal variation in the quiver.

I don't chop and I tend towards a more "folk-y" open chord style. Maybe a flat top muddy is just what I'm looking for. Opinions?

One thing I will say about my Mid-Mo is that it came to me with regular strings and I have struggled to keep it in tune. I have read that its best used with light to medium light strings and I have ordered some to see if that remedies the situation. Otherwise I like the little mandolin. It does its job.

From what I understand, Mike Dulak sets them up for GHS PF250's/A260's.

I feel that the Big Muddy mandolin can be an excellent first and last mandolin you would need to buy. I've enjoyed each one I've spent some time with.
