    Default Whither the Compton/Blake record?

Many months ago there was talk of Mike Compton and Norman Blake being in the studio together to record a bunch of Narmour and Smith songs, but I haven't heard hide nor hair of it for a long time. Has anyone else heard any updates about the state of that affair?

    Its pure gold..."Gallop to Georgia"..
not sure why there's not been more buzz about it???? Could be there's some kind of glitch with the universe...
If you want one ..you might have to gallop over to one of Mikes shows and get one off his merch table..
    here's a little taste..

Thanks for the update; nice to see Mr. Blake with that old Gibson Century of Progress guitar. Mr. Compton hasn't played around here in a few years, but I'll keep hoping. Maybe a copy will turn up here in the classifieds.

Do you actually have a copy? I spoke with Mike a few months ago and asked him when it would be released. He said he did not know. There has been no mention of it's release on Mike's website or Facebook page.

Yes, I was curious about the same. The Google does not have much current information, other than what looks to be a track from the fabled album on an Australian broadcaster's playlist:

    Enjoyable CD.

Mike plays lead on all 16 tracks. As he explains in the liner notes, Norman Blake decided to stick with the accompanist's role.

Also from the liner notes: "Learning to play this sampling of tunes was no small feat for me, what with their crooked meters and melodic inconsistencies. But it wasn't only that. Anyone who plays a fretted instrument knows the difficulties in playing an accurate interpretation of fiddle music. It's about so much more than just the notes."

I have a copy so I know it's available although my sleeve looks different then the one above, mine's a simple black and white sleeve. Great music, I'd contact Mike directly or through the Monroe Mandolin Camp.

It was on sale Friday at a Joe Newberry show in Raleigh, N.C., featuring Mike Compton. I believe at least five of the CDs on sale that night had Mike Compton contributions.

All the teasers sound great. Any idea of where to get a copy of this on line?

    Thanks,

    Mick

I've corresponded with Mike via email, and he said that there will be an official release "before long".

In the meantime, you can also get in touch with him and buy the CD.

(I asked Mike if this was cool to post and he said yes.)

Thanks for your interest in the CD, everyone. I have to admit I've dragged my heels on getting this out for a long time. But it's finally put together and done. Heidi and I are looking at 'official' release dates now. The CD can be had now by contacting Heidi Herzog at reddressproductions33@gmail.com.

Norman does not sing on the recording, nor do I. It was our task to present the tunes as themselves, nothing more. I asked Norman if he'd consider playing lead on these selections and he said, "I believe I've played a plenty lead in my career. I'll just sit here and play these here guitar chords".

There is also a book of tab/notation slated for later this year. As soon as the graphics guy gets his bit done that will be available.

    Miggy et al,

Just got a chance to listen to this in the car today. Heidi sent me an awesome package, dead of winter, full of postage stamps of flowers and this amazing collection of music.

    Mille grazie!

There have been three previous discs that have turned my head around in my mandolin playing: Grisman's Quintet '80. Matteo Casserino's Silent Fountain, and Carlo, Beppe and the Dawg's Traversata.

Now add to that Mike and Norm's Gallop.

Transcendent playing. Tone, style, class, cool, suave-ness trump (and I hate to use that word) unbridled virtuosity.

Mike and Norm are muy demasiado coolioso for that.

Mind blowing in its relaxed amazingness.

    Y'all crushed it. Crushed. It.

So good in the midst of my winter in Michigan dreaming of summer in Texas.

    Wow.

    Mick
