Default Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar (The Delmore Brothers)

Heard this on the bluegrass channel tonight and it knocked me out. It's from the 1930s but it sounds as good as new. I believe you're hearing guitar and tenor guitar (no mando, but tenor guitar is not too far off for us CBOM fans). Reading up on the Delmore Brothers - major dudes when it came to the early days of country music. Anyway, enjoy their great harmonizing -

The Delmore Brothers were great and had a huge influence on country music. Also a big influence on Doc Watson as well.

It has been a long time since I have read it but anyone interested in the Delmore Brothers should read this autobiography by Alton......

Alton and Raybon Delmore also teamed up with Grandpa Jones and Merle Travis to form Brown’s Ferry Four. They sang gospel tunes.

There's a live version of Tom Petty doing this song. I haven't been able to find it on Youtube. I love the song.

Doc does it on Doc Watson & Son album, 1965

I've got a version by Byron Parker & His Mountaineers, too. But there's really nothing like the Delmore Brothers, those dudes were awesome. Plenty of Delmore Brothers stuff on YT.

More modal and lonesome than the Delmores' original.Even some mandolin stuff from Mike Campbell playing what loo. Bass player Howie Epstein also played mandolin with the Heartbreakers in this period.

There's a good book, "Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction", edited by Charles Wolfe that is the autobiography of Alton Delmore. Fun, informative and interesting. It was published in 1977 by The Country Music Foundation Press. I don't know if it's still in print or not.

Wow I am no Tom Petty Fan anyway but I did not like that version at all.
Tony and Norman do it on "Blake and Rice" Doc of course.
I've heard Welch and Rawlings from a live recording as well.

Glad this was resurrected - there is no better version anywhere than The Delmore Brothers IMO, good to hear it again.
