Default Capo Madness (no mandolin content)

Capos seem to be a popular topic around here from time to time, maybe somebody will get a kick out of this short video ... Tommy Emmanuel discusses his frustrations and techniques for guitar capo.

Banjo players have been working a greater challenge, having to put on 2 capos/spikes. Sonny Osborne and Bobby Thompson evolved some techniques including sliding the capo towards bridge while you're putting it on and practicing a few dozen times so you know what strings will be sharp/flat and I've heard of people cutting the top rubber part that lays on strings to adjust for sharp/flatness also.

A little confession, I didn't find Tommy Emmanuel's video very enlightening on using a capo, other than to hear him talking about minutiae and revealing his (perhaps) obssesive-compulsiveness about details - entertaining.

gtani7, the page about Bobby Thompson was really interesting, thanks! I enjoyed reading about how he slid the capo while playing banjo rolls, awesome stuff.

I don't use a capo on mandolin, but I do use one on guitar frequently and I hate the way they work. Lifelong problems with getting capos to seat correctly on different guitar necks, and the tuning issues are pretty much common to everybody.
