Default New Labraid (Brian Dean) Grand Concert - Jazz

Greetings all. I wanted to share a few photographs that Brian shared with me recently. This is a new design he came up with, a sort of 'continuation' of his Grand Concert design. Joe Brent is one of my favorite musicians (look him up if you have not heard of him) and I have loved the tone of his Labraid GC for some time. I contacted Brian and had a series of wonderful conversations about the model and where he wanted to take it.

He mentioned that he had been reworking the design a bit, but at that time the 'idea' was just that. So fast forward a bit, and the first GC Jazz should arrive today! A few features:
    -Carved maple top
-Staved maple back, with walnut center piece
    -Long scale (353mm)
    -Internal, secondary back of spruce

Hopefully Brian will chime in and elaborate a bit more. Will provide sound/video samples once she arrives.

It's a pity we can't click on the pictures to enlarge them a little.
    Very nice though.

    G7MOF,

Good call-out. I have replaced all the images in my original post, and added a few new ones I found in my email. Those should be higher-res.

    Thanks for the kind words!

Very interesting. Are those scalloped staves on the back? What's the thinking behind this aspect of the design?

Every instrument Brian builds is more beautiful than the previous one. Another stunner. I just put down a deposit for a 10-string flat back from him, so I certainly hope that trend keeps up!

Really looking forward to hearing what this thing can do - I hope you enjoy every second of it!

    August,

I think this is a Brian aesthetic. If you look at many of his other models he uses fluted staves on the backs. I had Brian make me a hybrid of the L&H Style A and a Vega Cylinderback mandolin. It was glorious and a beauty to behold. Brian sinks a great deal of art into his craft. I'm more interested in the second internal soundboard which I guess is to make more overtones.

Josh, that is a truly beautiful instrument. I can only imagine how excited you must be and hope you receive your mandolin safe and sound. I'm sure it will sound as great as it looks.
We are so fortunate to have luthiers of Brian's caliber and artistic vision.

Very cool, how is the neck set on this mandolin? It's like nothing I have seen before.

Nice. Is Brian still in Sydney NS? He has always kept a pretty low profile there it seems.
