Thread: Strings for Italian Spruce

  1. #1

    Default Strings for Italian Spruce

I've just acquired my MT2 with Italian spruce top and want to put some new strings on it. I know strings have been discussed ad nauseum. However, after reading page after page of posts about strings, I haven't seen anything about what Italian spruce tops sound like with various string brands. I'd appreciate any comments or recommendations on string choice for an all-around string from those of you who have Italian spruce tops. I want something that will serve me well with bluegrass and other genres.

I used Mangan monel strings on an Italian topped Collings, and they sounded great.

Very even and tamed the high end alot.

I ended up getting rid of the MT2 for a Gibson F5.
The Italian topped MT2's are great instruments though.

I also tried EJ74,EXP74, and EJ75's....the monels won out.

My Italian spruce top is very warm and while phosphor bronze are ok, silk and bronze ok too, I am liking the pure nickel from GHS.

I have changed over to Mangan Monels on my italian topped Collings or the new D'addario monels.
