Thomas Morley (1557-1602): Canzonets To Three Voyces

    1. Lady Those Eyes, Those Eyes Of Yours - 0:00
    2. Love Learns By Laughter First To Speake - 1:49
    3. See Mine Own Sweet Jewel - 3:24
    4. Spring-Time Mantleth Every Bough - 4:51
    5. This Love Is But A Wanton Fit - 6:28
    6. Though Philomela Lost Her Love - 7:43

I have long been a big fan of Morley's madrigals and canzonets and have previously recorded the complete set of his canzonets for two voices. Here is a selection of six of his canzonets for three. The arrangements are by Steve Hendricks, from:

I LOVE these, have played them both on viola da gamba and recorder. Was revisiting them this am with my husband, who was not familiar, and found your video on YouTube. THANK you!

Thanks for the kind words -- I love Morley, and these are fun pieces to play on mandolin.

Thomas Morley (1557-1602): "O Sleep Fond Fancy" & "Love Learns By Laughing First To Speak"
From "Canzonets or Little Short Songs to Three Voyces" (1602)

I have just made another recording of two of Morley's canzonets to three voices, this time using the closest I have to a renaissance cittern -- my two 1920s Thuringian waldzithers. Both of these are originally for two treble and one tenor voice, which I have recorded as an instrumental trio, using my 1920s 10-string waldzither in CGDAE for the two treble parts and my 1925 Zimmermann 9-string waldzither in (G)DAEA for the tenor part.

    Setting by Steve Hendricks:

    10-string Thuringian waldzither (x2)
    9-string Jul. Heinr. Zimmermann waldzither
