Default new piece for mandolin orchestra by Bart Verstraeten (Persephone)

    Hi

For those interested in new mandolin orchestra pieces and performances, the Belgian composer Bart Verstraeten (°1981) composed a new piece for mandolin orchestra.

The piece is inspired by Greek mythology - Persephone is the daughter of Demeter (goddess of agriculture) which was kidnapped by Hades (god of the underworld where the dead reside). In the end Persephone stays 6 months with her mother and 6 months with Hades. (Full myth with all details is a lot more interesting but I'll leave it at this concise version.) This myth was the ancient Greek's way to explain the seasons. This change of the seasons and character of them is part of the musical structure and expression.

You can listen to a performance by the Brasschaats Mandoline-Orkest (mandolin orchestra from Brasschaat, north of Antwerp in Belgium), for whom the piece was written. Performance was on 30/09 at the jubilee concert of another Belgian mandolin orchestra (60th anniversary of the mandolin orchestra of Nassogne).

We need more pieces like this, a modern piece composed for mandolin with tremolos (a mandolin treated like a mandolin, not like a guitar)... beautiful!
