Thread: Post MAS syndrome

    Default Post MAS syndrome

Acquision: the day finally comes, you buy that vintage A you've been thinking of, and a week later, you buff out your F style build. Euphoria.

Phase one: you realize two weeks have gone by and you've not checked the classifieds once. You take a peek. Ha, nothing I really need, I'm set.

Phase two: you realize the classifieds is the place to see the most variety of instruments of various types. After you've read everything else on the cafe, you check the classifieds, more as an educational experience than anything else. These is some pretty wood to be seen. Back to enjoying the wonderful instruments you already have.

Phase three: you come to realize you are checking the classifieds first more often than not. Just out of habit more than anything. That way you can tell the noob there is a clean KM 150 there that meets their budget. But your Silverangel has been neglected for a while now, so you go play it.

Phase four: you see a modern oval, or a mandola, or an Ellis F style and wonder if you were going to buy another mandolin, what's the next logical one would be,hypothetically speaking.

Phase five: You wonder what coarse of unlikely events would have to transpire for you to buy a Gilchrist.

Every time I notice I'm spending too much time looking at this forum or the classifieds, it becomes apparent to me that my time could be much better spent actually playing the wonderful instruments I own!

I bought two in a week and was left having to explain to the Mrs. I avoided the classifieds for a couple of weeks but soon found myself spending my imagined lotto money. So far I'm still torn between a New Gibson Fern, Ellis F and a Red Diamond. LOL!!

Or, you have more than enough (shudder) and check the classifieds to see what the asking price will be if one needs to go to someone else.

While I still check the classifieds, don't have much of an interest in getting another one. Not giving everything I currently own enough playing time.

To make a long story short . . . earlier this year I came to the cold, hard realization that my 'career' as a mandolin player was simply never going to happen - and without being able to even remotely justify the investment in a 'top quality mandolin', I began thinning out my instrument closet. I have thoroughly enjoyed the 2 dozen mandolins that I have owned over the years - but I am now perfectly content with only 2 mandolins that are 'good enough' . . . but every now and then I will still think of the dream mandolin that I never owned.

I am more the post-partum type, I usually discover an instruments flaws after living with it for a while. I try to fix them as best I can, if I can't, I move on. And that what happens most of the time. I guess I am way too picky, or I need to buy better instruments.

I have one that I still love (the MD605) and have hopes for a second (the MD604 jury is still out).

I think that some of it is I don't like bright strings, and they all start with new strings, so too bright and twangy for a while.

It's time to up your game, my friend. Sounds like you need an MTO since ovals are your thing. Life is too short to be unhappy with your instruments. You've been responsible enough. When have you ever heard someone on their deathbed say they regretted buying the mandolin of their dreams?

I was over MAS until I was reading a thread about mando shops in Denver that said there was a nice Weber Bighorn in one. Well, it's no longer in Colorado.

I'm satisfied with everything i have, mainly because i know that i'll never have enough 'spare cash' for my dream mandolin. Having seen this one a week or so ago,it did get my personal MAS kick started (almost) again. The Northfield 'Big Mon' "A" style. The wood on the back & neck is as beautiful as it gets 'for me',

Avoiding the classifieds is relatively easy for Ivan and I due to the problems we’d experience on buying from this side of the pond.

There’s no chance of me winning the UK National lottery - I’ve never bought a ticket and usually refer to it as a “tax on the stupid”. As for robbing a bank, a, late, friend of mine (not a mandolin player) once admitted to doing that. He was a member of the SAS on a secret foreign mission and they’d run out of money!

How to avoid MAS on the cafe classifieds:
Focus your playing on an obscure member of the mandolin family like the 5 string mando or the piccolo mando. Then you'll be searching the classifieds in vain for an instrument.

I just added two to the collection and am trying not to look at the classified. I only look at mandolin accessories now. Its like weening a user off his addictions.

I’m a little over a year into this mando folly and have thus far kept the MAS at bay. I’m satisfied with my Eastman MD505–it’s still way better than I am. And I still have one more kid to put through college. Of course, my eye still wanders occasionally, but I try to tell myself “look, don’t touch.”

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Americans here, and may everyone’s MAS be treated or cured.

The best cure ive found for MAS is not having any money. Anyone tried that?

I am reminded of the Porter from Macbeth and his explanation of the effects of alcohol: "Lechery, sir, it provokes and unprovokes. It provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance." Alas, a lack of money only takes away the performance of MAS, not the desire.

Question: If MikeZito had $5 in his left pants pocket, and $5 in his right pants pocket, what would he have?

    Answer: Somebody else's pants on!
