    Default Johnny Adams Two-point. #032.

I picked up, used, a two point 2009 build by Johnny Adams of Florida. It really has a great sound. Has a Cedar top, Curly Maple Sides, Oregon Myrtle back and a Black Walnut neck. It came at a decent price from a dealer, and I've contacted Johnny about it. He tells me the Cedar came from an old house in Orlando and is over 100 years old. I love the tone. Reminds me a lot of Redwood. Much different from both my Gibson and Collings. It has been played a lot, from the looks of the top. And no wonder as the tone, volume and balance are terrific. Johnny tells me he's working on #072 right now. I'm playing the heck out of 032.

Johnny is a friend of mine, and his mandolins have a tone that is unique to him. Dark and chocolatey, with a scooped mid-section. Not for everybody, but they sound cool and would be a valuable addition to a collection. Nice guy as well.

Well I decided to do a cash/trade with Johnny Adams for #072, another two point. I used his #032 for the trade portion. I mailed him the mandolin and a check and he sent me #072. I'm here to say I love it. Has a Torrefied Wide Grain Sitka Spruce top, Torrefied Curly Maple sides and neck, along with a Cherry back. Grover tuners and an Ashton-Bailey tailpiece. Arrived two days ago on Monday January 15th. It's all I've been playing. It is a really loud mandolin. Lots of volume and a deep woody base along with a ringing treble and strong mids. A really nice mandolin I'm proud to own and play. A nice setup. He had about 20 hours playing time on it when I bought it. Here's a picture of it in a Superior 1520 case. That's a Spencer Oliver, Cherry, armrest on it.

I know this is all relative to the mandolin player. However, the neck on this Johnny Adams two-point I just got if just about the most comfortable neck of any mandolin I've played. For me that's real important when I'm playing for extended periods of time.

I have three mandolins - a '23 Gibson AJr, a Nugget F5 #307 and a Adams F Style #063. As expected each has its own unique "sound" and different "feel." I'll just say that the Adams holds its own in just about any setting. He has played and hand built for many years and certainly has an ear for building his mandolins to produce a wonderful sound.

He is in his 80's now and yes, very likely getting to the end of his building days. I am thankful that I have one to enjoy.

I've spoken with Johnny on the phone. He said #072 might be his last. In spite of that, he told me if I didn't like #072 he'd build me another mandolin. He'd just got back from the Jekyll Island Bluegrass Festival where he said he'd took part in 20 hours worth of jamming! Quite a man.
