Re: Tonedexter
I just got a Tonedexter and finished making a few wavemaps with it using a few different mic positions. I only had one condenser mic available at home this afternoon, a Shure KSM109, but I work for a mic manufacturer and will be able to try out several more options.
Anyway, came here to say two things:
1. If you have to plug in with a piezo pickup but are unsatisfied with how different it sounds from your instrument - this piece of gear is indeed a game-changer, there is nothing else like it.
2. You don't really need prior knowledge of mic placement, in fact the wave map results I got were counterintuitive to what I expected from my past experience miking instruments. You do need to try out a *variety* of mic placements (the manual has some suggestions) and listen to the resulting wave map sound. If you don't like it, try something different, and don't be afraid to try something out of left field.
