    Default Hughes F-5 #6

Here's the latest F-5 mandolin I just finished up. Walnut body and neck with red spruce top. Short neck per the customers request along with vine inlay on the radius fretboard. Speed necked as well. I think I finally have the graduations and tone bar placements where I want them. Here's a real short video clip.

Very nice. I would expect a bit of mellowness from the walnut.

I would have thought so too, but it's just as loud and punchy as any maple one i've built.Maybe even more so.

Vernon, that is beautiful. Did you have to use pore filler on the walnut?

I was going to but opted just to lacquer and wet sand between coats, worked out fine. Might have taken longer but it turned out like I wanted.

Vernon - You've used one of my very favourite woods on that mandolin - Walnut,& it looks awesome !. The back with it's un-fussy grain is as beautiful in it's own understated way as any quilted / flamed woods that i see regularly.

    Terrific work !,

Thanks! The walnut was a whole lot easier to work than that dang curly maple I normally use as well.

Walnut (along with Mahogany) is one of my favorite woods and satisfying to work with. Lovely mandolin. I thought the request for a "short" neck was interesting?

The customer once had a short neck Parsons that he let go and couldn't get used to the regular F scale length mandolins so he asked if I could build one. Challenge accepted!

Hi Vernon - A piece of constructive criticism if i may re.the recorded 'sound'. The mandolin,& indeed your speaking voice came across as a tad 'thin' sounding = room acoustics too lively. I understand that not everybody has a recording studio with optimum acoustics, but i've heard more than a few mandolin demos that would have sounded far better (IMHO),with a bit of room damping.

I'm only putting this forward, because i feel that some very fine sounding mandolins have been 'unfairly portrayed' in the overall sound rankings in demos, because of poor room acoustics - they come over as thin / tinny / trebly, when in all likelihood, they were anything but. Some of the demos posted by the well known dealers have faired pretty badly as well, due to the same thing - hard surroundings = pretty much a harsh sound for the demo.,

Point well taken Ivan. This (and most all my little demo vids) were taken in my kitchen using my antique android phone. I agree that I need to find a better system to show them off. It's not really a good representation of the sound of this one. Very loud and balanced with a great bottom end.I'll see if the new owner can record another one in a better environment to show it's full potential. Thanks for the suggestions!

Nice! I really think walnut is under-appreciated as a tone wood.
