Sorry to hear this. I met Melvin at a South Georgia festival several years ago, before I started building. Played his personal mandolin and acoustic guitar, both we're great instruments. Especially that mandolin! Prayers and thoughts to his family.

Melvin and Myself started building mandolins about the same time, around 1993. He had big endorsement success from Wayne Benson, mine was with Don Rigsby of Lonesone River Band fame. We had become fairly good friends through the years and never was a rivalry between us. Melvin had the good fortune of having John Hutto as a mentor and supplier of building information that wasn't much published in the early 90s. Melvin had shared Johns "secrets" and methods with me , with a promise that I keep it between him and me, and I have kept that promise and always will. I appreciated Melvin and John both as friends, John was a neck of a Monroe style player and a great tenor singer. So, RIP Melvin you, were a great guy, friend and keeper of many secrets about mandolin building.....Love ya Becky
