    I’m sure that it’ll sound pretty ropey but I wonder what difference turning the top wood grain through 90 degrees to normal will make to the sound of a mandolin?

    I would assume it would be difficult to support the weight of the bridge that way. The usual design has the load distributed across the grain, not in line with it.
