    Default Collings MT NMD

Well, another mandolin followed me home. This time, it's a completely different animal from what I already own. Been thinking about this one since I first played it a few months ago. A combination of the projection, playability and visual appeal that made me decide to finally go for it today. As it's still the honeymoon period, won't gush about how much I like it. But I do like it. A lot. Neck is surprisingly comfortable and easy for me to get around one. And setup is top notch. Am posting about it tonight to take a break from the last few hours of playing.

Details - Collings MT. With the added features of a gloss natural top and tortoise pickguard.

I have described the Collings MT that I owned as the first mandolin that didn’t limit me in any way. It was a professional grade instrument that convinced me that there is a place for f-holes in my life and has become the benchmark for playability by which all others are measured. It has since moved on, but I think of it often, and some of my favorite mandolins are built by Stefan Passernig, who (from what I’ve read) worked at Collings for over four years and helped Bill bring the MT line to production.

Yup. The same one. More I look and play this one, more I'm convinced it's also got the honey amber finish.

If you don't want to be even more tempted, don't go in there. They just got in an MT2 with quilted maple and speed neck. Stunning.

I love the coloring on that MT. One thing about Collings, the wood on the MT and MF is always nicely figured. No skimping there on their "entry" mandolins.

Update - after some experimenting with strings and picks, found a combo that works for me on this instrument. D'Addario FW-74 and Blue Chip 40 or one of my Manouche picks. Had a couple band practices and a show and it hangs in there with a very loud fiddle and a 2 row accordion. Also plays well with my other band, which is just a duo with a fiddle player. Her fiddle is quieter, but full sounding and this combo on the Collings compliments it well.

Still not planning on getting rid of either of my old Gibsons though. Nice to have the contrast.

Of course, then I had to go and get a Waterloo Jumbo King Deluxe rosewood to compliment the Collings. But that's another story.

I think I know that story too, I ended up with a Collings OM2H and I don’t really play guitar...
