Default River of the West 2019 - Who's Going?

    Hey there, pickers,

I'll be attending Brian Oberlin's 'River of the West' mandolin camp this June in Oregon. Who's going? Who has gone? What should I expect?

    Thanks,

    Tom

I signed up the day I got my first mandolin, two months ago. Needless to say this is my first mandolin camp. The four hour drive isn't bad, but I'm thinking about arriving the day before and would be interested in some activity that day. If anyone has any plans/ideas for Wednesday June 5 please let me know. Thanks.

I've attended for several years. It is a celebration of the mandolin. Four days of laid-back but intensive mandolin instruction, jamming, and performing.

From the mandoberlin.com website: "During the four days of mandolin immersion, each Camper will experience seven – 90 minute workshops from all four teachers, ensemble rehearsals and performance, structured and non-structured jams, faculty concerts, open-mic concert, bonfire jam, meals, and lodging."

Brian and the other camp instructors will be performing here the evening before camp begins:

I'll be there. First mandolin camp for me. I chose it because it's my kind of camping - actual beds to sleep on and flushing toilets and a roof over head. Oh yeah, also because of the instructors.

I am looking forward to it. See you there.

Just read that the camp is full. Who's group is everyone in? I'm in Compton's and I'm really excited about that!

I requested Compton and didn't hear any different so I think I'm in his group.

    I do have Mike.

    Good timing:
    1) received notice and printed out lesson and ensemble material today
    2) will receive my Pricetone mandolin Monday
    3) will leave on two week vacation early Tuesday, taking 1) and 2) with me.

Hello fellow RoW mandoliners - I'm looking for a ride share from Portland on Thursday morning. I'll be flying in on Wednesday night and staying locally. Please PM me if you are driving over from Portland and have room for one more. Thanks!!

Just got home. Here's the instructors, Paul Glasse (swing and jazz), Tim Connell (Brazilian choro), Mike Compton (bluegrass), and Camp founder Brian Oberlin giving a Saturday night concert. One big surprise, Paul Glasse was the only one who didn't play a Thelonius Monk tune.

But yuge fun, and I've got a great deal to unpack, mando-wise...

It was my first visit to RoW, and I'm one satisfied picker. Brian Oberlin runs a top notch camp. Plenty of fun loving pickers at all levels. Excellent instruction from all four teachers - Brina, Mike Compton, Tim Connell, and Paul Glasse. They were very accessible and helpful. Great food, beautiful grounds, and the whole thing wrapped up with a really good recital. I'll be back!!
