I too love Mandolin Orange, and I do like their name. However, when it was noted by someone around here that it might be a play on words (an aspect of the name that had completely eluded me), well, ever since then, I cannot hear their name without thinking of this:
Thanks, Dem. Can't seem to get enough of these guys.
I must say is that the well worn March 31st 1924 Loar with removed Virzi Tony Williamson had for sale a bit ago he's playing? Sounds GREAT to me!
Love them too. In some of their early videos, he played an Eastman mandolin (assume it wasn't just a prop). It sounded pretty good. But that Gibson is really nice.
The song Wolves is very Dylanesque. I like it for the dry delivery and inherent power.
I’m sure that Gibson sounds ridiculous in person. However, although this one sounds great through the internet, my ears miss the Gilchrist. Hopefully MO will come through again this summer so I can hear the Loar up close. Please!!!
Drew,
Thank you.
I was looking at the mandolin angle not the orange...
Orange you glad I didn’t say mandarin?
Sheesh ... went right by me.

Here's one! 9 years ago.
Thanks Drew, I'd never seen that clip. They sounded just as great together back then.
Here's another with the Eastman. One of my top five favs:
The sound in the empty mill building is just great.
How about that j 45ish guitar a friend built. You can really judge the career trajectory by the instruments.
Silverangel A
Arches F style kit
1913 Gibson A-1
i like it when a song is introduced;sorta like introducing a friend.
yup, andrew could pull some powerful tone from that gilchrist. a good player sounds good on just about any mando. the loar is
sublime.
those two are great together.
thanks,demetrius.

just noticed andrew doodling on hartford's real at the very end of the video. fun tune i first heard

"bit of a zombie post here, but out of curiosity, I did some digging about this guitar ...
from Griggs Guitars:
(bottom of page)
"Andrew used to work in my shop part time before they got big. We built his guitar together to my specs. He even did the Relic Light Sunburst."
They sure used that guitar a lot. It sounds great, even though the sunburst looks like finger-painting....
I think the Gilchrist was awesome - but may have been a little bright for him. Similar to the Kimble. His Loar has a throaty depth that works perfectly for their style of music. The Sullivan was also a winner, IMHO.
Found good interview on that very nice "Pre-War Guitars Company" guitar in first video above. Andrew and Emily talk about specs they asked for, like an old 1936 Martin D-28 sunburst.

Yes, great woody mahogany tone on that Griggs they used to play for many years, maybe still do sometimes.
