    Default Ektarina Skliar playing Asturias

One of my favorite classical guitar pieces. Ms. Skliar has done what I think is a very nice mandolin arrangement, and the transcription -- no financial interest -- is available on her website in standard notation.

Sorry if this is a duplicate post. I did a search but did not turn up this material.

    Very nice, indeed.

Question: I see that she uses her left thumb every now and then to fret the G string. I think mostly to fret the low A on a four string A major chord. Is this a common practice?

Good catch on the thumb. I had not noticed that, more experienced players than I are a better resource. I rarely do that on guitar, and never on mandolin.

    Thanks!

Yes, I watched that one today. I don’t know much about that instrument.

That's an old electric guitar player's trick. Hendrix was a master at it!

I use it on the mandolin too. Mostly for a D chord with my thumb on the G strings 2nd fret and my 1st or 2nd finger on the E strings 2nd fret. This leaves my other 3 fingers available for fill notes. Probably not a "proper" way to play, but certainly useful and effective!

Fretting notes with the thumb is a common balalaika technique. It is taught in Mel Bay's balalaika method.
She also uses that technique a lot on the domra. So, probably, that's a common domra technique too.
Perhaps she learned that technique from playing domra and found it useful on mandolin.
