Thread: Can you help me identify this bluegrass song?

Question Can you help me identify this bluegrass song?

I learned a tune several decades ago and I want to relearn it. I thought it was by Curly Seckler off his first album, but I don't find it there. I thought it was called "Bluegrass Time". The lyrics start something like this:

Out in the country, far from city life
There live a kind of people who work from morn to night
They're might good and friendly, you're always welcome there
They play country music, especially one fare

    Bluegrass time, bluegrass time
From the hills of West Virginia to the sea in Caroline
    Bluegrass time, bluegrass time
My friend's on the guitar, they call it bluegrass time

Does anyone know the source of the song?

    Thanks much, Randall

Thanks! Nice album; I like it too, but the song I was looking for wasn't on it. However, it did lead me to a listing of all of Curly Seckler's albums and I didn't find the song Bluegrass Time listed on any of them. So I'm guessing that the song was not recorded by Curly.

Randall--I was fascinated earlier this evening when I read your post, because I've always liked that song and knew I had the LP featuring it somewhere! I set out on a quest (after a somewhat healthy dinner) to find it, so here's (likely) where you heard it: County Records #731 "Bluegrass in the Carolina Mountains", Cullen Galyean, Wayburn Johnson, and The Foot Hill Boys. It was written by Cullen Galyean, recorded in 1971, and the album was released in May 1972. I've never heard it on any other recorded project, although (and as we all know) that can't be ruled out!

Someone uploaded the entire album to YouTube, however the speed is a bit quicker than 33 1/3 RPM! Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU-VSuQqIaA "Bluegrass Time" is track #8.

Set your playback speed to 0.75, and I think you're near to the original, though the fiddle quality suffers somewhat.

    Your song's at 19:10.

There are at least 2 additional versions recorded of this song:

    1. CD titled "Cullen & Mickey Galyean & Friends" (no label)

    2. CD titled "Born Into Bluegrass: The Songs Of Cullen Galyean" (on Mountain Roads Recordings)

    Hope this is helpful,
    Greg
