Up until now, I had been contemplating selling my Weber Yellowstone HT F-Style.
This thread is giving me second thoughts. It IS the best sounding mandolin I've ever owned after all...

Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, Kevin! This sure is a real thriller!

    Hi Everyone,

Good news.... I found the buyer on Facebook and he posted as recently as December 16, 2021. :-)

I asked him to be my "friend," so hopefully he sees the request and accepts it. He apparently lives in Germany right now. There are still a bunch of question marks, especially pertaining to whether I'd send him money and expect something in return, but there's hope, and it's a blessing that he is okay. :-)

Yes! Good news indeed! I hope he contacts you, and still has the mandolin, or at least remembers who he sold it to.

Now let’s see if he still checks his email from 8 years ago, and responds to the guy who sold him that Weber. If it’s really him, I’m hoping he still has it and is sick of it, lol! :-)
It's amazingly rare that someone succeeds in stumping the Cafe Brain Trust. Here, Scott himself appeared to hold the answer.

There's more than one reason he may have cut off contact with his family. I hope you hear from him and can get some resolution.

    You're certainly right there.

It's good to hear he is alive, but there appear to be private/family issues involved here which perhaps should not be highlighted on a forum such as this. I'd be pleased to hear if you do manage to find your old mandolin though.

I had remorse once about a Weber Vintage O, a hybrid F4 model. Found another and it is in good shape, plays and sounds great.

The only instrument I have remorse for is a Fylde standard mandolin that I sold to a friend, everytime I hear him play it I want it back.

    Hi Everyone,

Thanks again for your interest in this thread and your encouragement regarding the quest to get my old mandolin back.

There's more good news.... I have made contact with a close acquaintance of the person who bought the mandolin and was happy to hear the person is reachable and seemingly in good health. My message to the acquaintance was forwarded to the person and I was given reasonable assurance I would hear back sometime soon(ish).

I can't tell you how happy I am about how this is shaping up.

    Updates for ya'....

I am in direct contact the buyer who, despite having what sounds like a few life-ridden years (join the club), is in good spirits and health. This is an amazing development after a few years of trying to locate him and then get a response.

Good news.... He still has the Fern! According to his report it is good shape, although he no longer has the original case. What's more, he is willing to sell it back as he has decided he's more so into another brand. Interestingly, he's more interested in a trade than receiving cash from me, and he also lives internationally, both of which raise a number of considerations. If this can actually come through, I think I would rather buy a plane ticket and go to where he is for an in-person transaction. After all, this is very important to me and I could celebrate with some musician friends in Europe in a neighboring country while I'm at it.

I'm so thankful for the Scott, (who was able to locate and send me information from when I sold the Fern in the Cafe's classifieds years ago), the Cafe in general, and who or whatever has been working in my favor to help make this happen. Much gratitude!

This is a total Disney ending, Kevin, congratulations! I'm wondering what you'll trade him for, but maybe I shouldn't be so nosy; in any case, wave as you pass over Spain!

Total Disney potential, at least in the pastoral and Disney-branded sense, lol.

He is particularly interested in Northfields and would like to do a straight up trade for a used one. So, it may be that I actually buy a used Northfield with the intention of trading it to him. The issue is, he likely wants a Northfield Artist model that's about one year old, and they cost a bit more than a used Weber Fern, even the used Weber Ferns finished in varnish. So, it's sounding like he wants more than it's worth. However, he just so happens to have a very motivated buyer (me), and likely knows it. It will come down to how much I want it vs how much I want to pay the fair market value.

Any advice is more than welcome.

I personally wouldn’t take a bath on this, Kevin. I’ve let a few hundred dollars go the other party’s way in a couple of trades I’ve made (particularly with dealers when I really didn’t want to deal with selling), but not a couple thousand. That said, if you have the funds and are that motivated to get this Weber back, then who am I to dissuade you! It’s amazing that you’ve gotten to this point!

I’d get it and make a fun trip out of it to boot. Talk about having a cool story to go with your mandolin! You’ve regretted letting it go for years and will still want it years from now in all likelihood.

The other option is buy the Northfield, one your really like the sound of. Make the trip, it will cost you, but will be a great memory. Play your Weber against the Northfield and pick the best sounding one. Either way you get a trip and memories out of it, and you either get your Weber back, or quit pining for it.

The only way this story gets better is if it turns out you are both twins separated at birth and finally find each other this way haha.

I'm sure it is a wonderful mandolin, but also seems like a lot of effort, time, and expense to get it back. If it were a USA buyer and seller, sure, go for it. Even treat yourself to overnight shipping, if you wanted. But, buying a mandolin, taking it to Europe in hopes of a trade? It seems like a rather one-sided trade to me and there is no guarantee he will follow through. There is also the chance your tastes have changed since then and the Weber no longer dazzles you. Either way you are stuck in Europe without a deal. Or maybe a vacation sounds good to you? For me, it would be way too much work.

Only you can decide what the mandolin means to you.

Perhaps the new Hamlett 2 point would fill the bill. I can't imagine any Weber could hold a candle to it. Just sayin'.

Point well taken, Jeff. I do think he makes trips to the states and it’s within quite a bit of reason to plan around that fact.

Dan…. Oh, the Hamlett is mighty, mighty fine indeed! There’s not a shred of wanderlust in that regard. ‘Tis a heart warmer itself. Swoon worthy. Alluring down to the last woody chop, lol!
