    Fare you well my honey
Fare you well my only true one
All the birds that were singing
    Have flown except you alone

Going to leave this Brokedown Palace
On my hands and my knees I will roll roll roll
Make myself a bed by the waterside
In my time - in my time - I will roll roll roll

In a bed, in a bed
by the waterside I will lay my head
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
    to rock my soul

    River gonna take me
    Sing me sweet and sleepy
    Sing me sweet and sleepy
all the way back back home
    It's a far gone lullaby
    sung many years ago
Mama, Mama, many worlds I've come
    since I first left home

    Goin home, goin home
by the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
    to rock my soul

Going to plant a weeping willow
On the banks green edge it will grow grow grow
Sing a lullaby beside the water
Lovers come and go - the river roll roll roll

Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
    to rock my soul

He will be missed, but thankfully his memorable lyrics will live on.

Lost one of the greatest lyricists of all time. The article says his favorite lyric was from Ripple, “Let it be known there is a fountain that was not made by the hands of men.” Dawg played on the studio version (like everyone here didn't already know that).

Never heard that anybody than Garcia, Dawson and Hunter should have been involved in the writing of Friend of the Devil

It's a huge loss....a true gentleman among those who wandered way out, but with out him they never could have wandered so far.

I was just listening last week to Jesse McReynolds' Songs of the Grateful Dead that Robert Hunter collaborated on. A beautiful CD, Robert was one of my favorite Lyricists. He seemed to evoke such a Depression Era Americana feeling on his songs.

He was one of the very best lyricists. Some absolutely great tunes came from his pen and the guitar of Jerry or Bobby.

Pete Rowan has always had the gift of being able to do that.

It was those three. atsunrise's post is just a very confusingly formatted chord chart from a Rice, Rice, Hillman, Pedersen recording of FOTD.

    Image it more like this:

    Code:
(Larry Price [sic]) Friend Of The Devil written by Jerry Garcia
    (Tony Price [sic]) Robert Hunter
    (Chris Hillman) John Dawson
    (Herb Pedersen)

Thanks Jefflester, many apologies, it’s my occasionally provocative nature that got the better of me.
I could add in my defense that the site where I found this info has been up for many years, spreading the confusion.

On a lighter note here’s a prank call from a Grateful Dead lover, or at least someone who enjoyed Robert’s poetry.
The discussion is the never ending, sometime farcical Brexit or Remain, yes or no debate.
I like Farage by the way, he enjoys a good laugh.

Q: What's the difference between songwriting and poetry?
    A: Royalties.

But it's damn good when they come together. Bye, Bob.
