Thread: Lonesome Moonlight Waltz

    Default Lonesome Moonlight Waltz

Hello folks! I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions on putting some bells and whistles on Bill's Lonesome Moonlight Waltz. I added some slides on some of the licks like Grisman does but I would like to get your input on how you guys on the mandolin cafe play it.

Ps. I dont intend on straying away to much from the original, just want to try some new techniques on a classic tune.

    Thanks a ton,

We had this tune in the Cafe's "Song-A-Week" social group a few years ago. Check this link for several very nice versions from other Cafe members, with a wide range of approaches from bare bones to lots of bells and whistles.

I recommend in particular the wonderful versions by Michael Pastucha, Hendrik Luurtsema (twice!), Topher Gayle and GHall (with his daughter). My own version is there as well, but in retrospect my tempo is too fast. If you fancy adding your own version, that's what the SAW group is for!

This is one of my favorite versions of the song! Tiny and Jethro were undoubtedly one of the best mandolin duo in history.

Yes! Good chemistry there. Love that album. And +1 on SAW Group, lots of great ideas and lots of encouragement from fellow members when you post there.

P.S. Ive been playing this one from time to time over the past couple years, and it always sounds pretty awful when I attempt it

I play it mainly in second position, inserting open notes whenever they're of any help. E.g. the first notes: d-f-d(c)-a are all played on the a course. Sometimes I use tremoloed double stops, sometimes not. On the passage from C7 to A7 I play (non-tremoloed) triple stops. Whatever I add to this inerpretation is improvised.

Carlini's arrangement reminds me of a quote by Miles Davis from the recording of Sketches of Spain: "If I play bebop on this song I'll sound like a hip cornball".

Russ: That was a great Mando Mania session arranged by Tony Williamson at Merlefest. He always gets together a great gathering of the mandolin players in most of the bands for an hour of Mando-bliss.

Strings and Julin do a really nice, sort of long, rather simple version of this tune that I used to learn the basics.
