Thread: Fretboard Riser

    Default Fretboard Riser

I am building my #2 A style mandolin and have a question about the fretboard riser. #1 was an IV kit. I have to make my own riser and don't see any reference anywhere as to the height relative to the mandolin depth.

How tall should it be? My guess is that it should be tall enough to support the fretboard at the 5 degree neck angle.

I have made a riser that seems tall to me, but it gives me a fretboard angle that puts a straight edge right on top of the Cumberland bridge at its lowest point.

    Any advice is appreciated.

What did it look like on your plan? The elevation view should provide all the information.

1/2" at the crosspiece. That's from the rim to the bottom of the fingerboard.

That is what I aim at too. I would add that I fit the neck before I finish shaping of the riser. I aim for 1/2" overstand at the crosspiece and neck projection (with starightedge placed on surface of neck without fingerboard) just hair above 1/2" above top at bridge location. This results in typical bridge height for adjustable bridge. Then I fit the riser to match the angle.

Adrian, I figured you'd agree since I took that measurement from your print.

That's right where I've been also. Assuming a 5/8" top plate.
Adrian's print is a valuable reference.
