Doing an amateur restoration on an 1890s Joe Bohmann bowlback. The end of the headstock is adorned with what I’d call a split pediment if it was on a clock, as in the photo of an intact one, below. Now Joe said he was the best builder in the world, but the two scrolls were gone on mine from short grain or impact. I understand how you put an internal cross-grain disk under the veneer on an F, but what would you do for these tiny bits, if it was an important restoration?
There is a topside veneer, over what looks like mahogany, no backside veneer. What I just did was to cut off the top above the tuners and make a laminate from what I think is walnut keeping the grain parallel, with thin aluminum epoxied between. Then I cut the pattern and glued it on.
