    Default Gig bag for mandola?

I searched online but could not find any gig-bags of approprite dimensions for my mandola.
Some bags were way too large. A few were too small (a common problem was only 30 cm diameter/width).

    The dimensions:
    Total length: 73 cm (28.74")
    body length: 35 cm (13.78")
    body width: 31 cm (12.2")
    height: 7.5 cm (2.95")

    BTW - scale length:42cm (16.5")

Thanks, but their bag is too big. Their length is 87cm and width 38cm, while my mandola's length 73cm and width 31cm (as written above).

    Hi,

When I was looking to house a similar sized instrument recently the Ritter mandola gigbag from Thomanns in a Germany seemed the best available sizing at 780mm length, 380mm width and 85mm depth.

    Regards,

A little too big for mine also. So I put foam inside.

    It's a nice bag.

Thanks Mandrian, but your suggestion is still rather big... a 780x380x85 mm bag for a 730x310x75 mm mandola leaves quite a space inside.
    Especially the width...

Blue Heron makes custom gig bags. I have one for a Buchanan 10-string.

Thanks Tom, but even their catalog mandola gig-bags (inappropriate for my instrument) cost $228, don't know about custom-made.

My mandola is not such an expensive instrument to justify such costs.
I am looking for something much cheaper (sub $90).

Here's what I did. With the adjustable neck support and the memory foam velcroed in I can adjust it to fit many different instruments. Cost around $90 if I remember.

Thanks Chuck, you did nice work there, but I am already using an electric-guitar gig-bag in a similar way to what you suggest.
I would really prefer a much smaller, snug-fitting gig-bag. Besides being more compact and comfortable to carry around, a small bag is also important when I check-in to flights and have to convince the desk attendant to allow me to bring my instrument on-board. I never agree to send my instrument away in the plane baggage compartment, and it turns into an unpleasant argument in about 30% of my flights.
I never had this problem when flying with my mandolin (celtic style), which is shorter than the mandola by about 3 inches, and has an appropriately fitting gig-bag.

You might check with Gold Tone. They make all different size instruments including mandolas, big ukes, short tenors, and funky "folkternative instruments". One of their gig bags might be close.

The Gold Tone Irish Tenor gig bag seems pretty close. Made for a 14 inch pot, it would be almost perfect for body length, and only a bit shy of 2 inches large across. 3 inches too long at 32” but the upper part could be packed. The Tenor/Traveller bag might even be closer. 14 inch body, 31 inch length. 5 inch deep though.

Thanks a lot Multidon and Chuck, the Tenor/Traveller bag indeed comes the closest so far, but it is still 2 inches too deep. I suspect my instrument will bounce inside.

Look for tenor ukulele bags. My Stahl mandola is:

    29 1/4 inches long
    15 1/2 inches body length
    10 3/4 inches body width
    2 inches body depth

It fits like a glove in a Cordoba tenor uke gig bag, which is heavily padded and has an ample accessory pocket. My mandola's a bit bigger than yours, so perhaps a concert uke gig bag might be a better fit. But I'm very impressed with the overall quality of the Cordoba bag; it's a $4K instrument, and I've been unable to find a well-fitting hardshell case, but in the meantime I use the Cordoba bag as its only case.

Thanks AllenHopkins, I checked the bags you recommended.

    > My mandola's a bit bigger than yours

Actually, my mandola is wider, so unfortunately it doesn't fit into these bags. Its width is 31 cm (12.2")

    Hey Sevelos,

How about an Access Upstart Half-Size Acoustic Guitar bag? Here's a URL https://www.accessbagsandcases.com/p...ic-guitar-bag/

I have a Stage Three and a Stage One Access bags and they are really well made. Their Stage Three Gig Bag is my favorite case for a bunch of reasons. Their Upstart is their lowest level bag but if the other models are any indication, they are probably good for the money ($50 US). You could also look through their other lines for something else suitable.

    Best wishes,

    Bob

Eastman Octave Mandolin comes with a gig bag and if it anything like the mandolin gig bag that mage it is high quality. The width of the body of the Eastman is about what yours is the depth of the sides is less but it is arched and of course the neck length would be a few inches longer too. However, assuming you can buy one separately, other than custom made ones, I doubt you will get a gig bag that exactly fits your mandola.

BTW you never said who made your mandola. Perhaps you could contact the maker and see what they can provide?

If not, it looks like APC makes similar style mandolas (called in Portuguese bandolas) and they do sell bags but I don't see any specs for them on this page. Maybe contact them.
