All instruments have a story -- and musicians are eager to tell their part in it.

Introducing a new interview series with host, Demetrius Becrelis, who invites musicians to share how they came to own a beloved instrument.

This is 'Just in Case You Didn't Know' with Josh Pinkham and how he came to own his Red Diamond mandolins...and his Chris Thile Signature Casein Mandolin Pick.

I may have missed it in the video, and it looks like it, is that Red Diamond the "Reischman Replica" model that was made specifically for John? Some years ago John Reischman told me he sold it to fund a CD project, but he didn't say who he sold it to.

Hi John, Thanks for chiming in. I'm actually not sure about wether that was Reischman's personal replica or not. Great question! I'll have to find that information out and report back here...

Hi Victor! You're very welcome. We had a blast that night! Josh is such a great picker and so deserving of that fine instrument. That Red Diamond is in the "top best 5" mandolins I have played. Don is a genius!

Last weekend I was cleaning up my photo library and coincidentally ran across this May 2004 photo of Josh and Mike Marshall jamming after the main concert.

    Boy all growed up now!

Awesome video and story by Josh. I was just a bit disappointed at the distorted audio at the end when Josh was playing the RD.

Hi Larry, Thank you for the kind words, and yes It was very cool hearing Josh's story. I know! ugh the ending of the video right? Super bummed about that. I'm gonna see if there is a way to clean that up and repost it. That really shows you how powerful that mandolin is...

    Thank you,

Thank you for posting this video. I've been looking for a builder of fine mandolins that would take on a LH project. After this video, I looked up Don and actually had a nice conversation with him. As luck or grace would have it, he is starting another batch here soon and was delighted to build only his second LH F5! So now I'm researching which voicing to go with, etc. Looks like my custo LH Weber will be going up for sale in the near future

Hey Guys! Thank you all for taking the time to watch the video and chiming in. I went back and did my best to clean up the audio distortion especially during Josh's demo of the Red Diamond mandolin. I deleted the video off of YOUTUBE and I am going to repost it with a new thread and if one of the administrators can delete this thread it would be good. Although I'd hate to lose the great comments. Thanks again and be sure to listen to it again. I managed to get rid of a decent amount of the distortion. It is definitely more representative of Josh's mandolin.

    Thank you,
    Demetrius

Nice video. After watching it, I broke down and ordered one.

Not the Red Diamond, but the pick. Sweetwater is out right now, but expects another shipment before too long. I ordered online, and the rep called me to make sure I knew they were not presently in stock, but he did say they were still manufacturing the picks during the shutdown.

I actually did briefly consider the Red Diamond mandolin. The Music Emporium had one I really liked, but it looks like it may have just now sold, I could swear it was still available on Friday morning. I was trying to justify it in my mind, thinking that if I sold my two mandolins, and possibly a guitar I could swing it. But then I realized what a hassle that would be (especially right now), and that at the end of the day, I've got a long ways to go before I outgrow my present collection. But it's nice to dream. They really are sweet instruments.

I think I was mistaken, the Red Diamond mandolin at Morgan Music is still for sale, i think I got that one mixed up with the one at Music Emporium. I think I'd be happy with either one.

I had the pleasure of playing Josh’s RD a few years ago after a concert at a small local venue. He offered to let me play it, and I declined until a young girl came up to him with a playbill and a CD to sign, and he started to set it on the hallway floor. I intervened, of course, and picked on it for about 5 minutes in a side room. I agree with Dem, it’s in my top 5, along with a Giacomel (that was a surprise), a couple of Loars, and a Gil.

We actually took the guys out for dinner and drinks afterwards and really enjoyed speaking with them. There was a band playing in the bar that night, and my wife asked what world class musicians thought of the bar band. Jeremy says, “sometimes they’re pretty awful, but these guys are good.” Josh had his mando in his Carlton and went up to speak with the band during a break. Turns out they’d played a few of the same festivals that year, lol...
