Sorry to change the direction of this thread slightly, Jill was commenting that there are a number of good tenor banjo players from Manchester, and in my last post I mentioned Brendan Dempsey but couldn't find any clips of him. I was just chatting to him and mentioned this, and he sent me this clip, which isn't great quality (a phone at a session), but was at a local session when it was my birthday a few years ago. Another pal who came along is the great 5 string banjo player Jonny Hulme who can pick a handful of Irish tunes and played a set with Brendan in this video. This does mean that we can't hear Brendan that well, but this may be of interest to banjo fans generally.

The lady that is sat next to me in this clip is Grace Kelly who is a mainstay of the Irish scene in Manchester and runs my local session. She is a great whistle and fiddle player and singer and also a mate of Angelina Carberry, here she is playing whistle at Angelina's performance at the Ceoltóir na Bliana 2021. She composed the first tune.

Here's a set of reels with Angelina Carberry on tenor banjo, and Martin Quinn on accordion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy8RZf_kFGY

I just snagged Angelina's first album that's not too easy to find, An Traidisiun Beo with her father Peter and Martin Quinn. It's great!

Not surprising, but everything here seems to be focused on lead/melody playing and not much about the instrument used for accompaniment.

One of my favorite Irish flute records was Paddy Carty's "Traditional Irish Music" first released in 1971 and later reissued on CD. It's just Carty on Radcliffe system keyed flute backed by Mick O'Connor on tenor banjo. The very sparseness of record is one of its strengths as far as I'm concerned. You can plainly hear everything Carty does on flute without any obstructions; likewise, you can clearly hear everything O'Connor does on banjo making learning from either instrument a lot easier. The translucent timbre of the flute allows the rhythm instrument to come through without blending as might happen if the lead were a fiddle. The banjo playing isn't particularly ornate, but it ably fills the support role and offers a good basic instructional course on backup playing. (which can be applied to the mandola, OM as well.)

(The whole album is up on YouTube, btw.)

(If you want/need lead sheets of the tunes, all of them are up on The Session: https://thesession.org/recordings/339

Must agree with the above. Years ago you would hear people from his generation say: None Better. They would also speak of "The Carty Flow." He made another recording with Conner Tully on fiddle. Classic East Galway style.

While this doesn't exclusively feature tenor banjo there's some nice tenor banjo playing on a few tracks:

    Hi folks,
I just "discovered" Stevie Dunne when a friend of mine on facebook shared a video, I really like his playing. A quick trawl through this thread showed that Jill already mentioned him and shared a link (thanks Jill!). He banjo style reminds me a bit of Cathal Hayden. I don't own it, but he has made an album called simply "banjo" https://tradconnect.com/profiles/blo...ew-album-banjo

I suspect that it will be well worth a listen.

Here he is playing with a really nice guitarist who is new to me, Gerard (Gerdy) Thompson, who seems be a musical partner of Stevie, and the evergreen John Joe Kelly.

This isn't a recording but hopefully she'll have a recording of out in the future as she's an awesome tenor banjo player - Elaine Reilly from Longford, being interviewed and playing some tunes on Ceili House with Kieran Hanrahan:
