Default Listing of 3-string chord shapes

    Hi All,
I believe there used to be a listing of 3-string chords in the Learn/Listen section of this Forum. Or perhaps it was on the Mandozine website? In any case, I have been searching all over and can't find it anywhere. Has this been removed? It was a handy way to get the proper name of a 3-string chord, which can often be confusing because of note omissions. Thanks in advance for any help with this.

I seem to remember that but don’t know where it was.

Three note chords have multiple names, 223x is C6 and A minor, which is an easy example. 425x is E7 and G6. No real ‘proper’ name, depends on the context. It seems most confusing with rootless inversions.

Don't recall a specific three finger chart but there's a two and a four and a general one with tons of three fingers. This page was prepared long ago as a sort of landing spot for Google searches and it lists all those resources. I can confirm nothing has been removed in that category. Hope this helps.

Not sure if this was linked to yet by Scott or someone else, but it is my go-to resource for mandolin chords.

For 3 finger chords, just use the bottom three string sets (G, D, A) and leave the E string alone. I usually use the E string only with Am, G, and Bm.

Thanks to all for your replies and links However, since starting this thread earlier today, I have found the missing link! Here it is:

    http://www.mandozine.com/chords/3-Note-Chords.pdf

If you are using 3-note chords, this is a very handy reference. Shows two shapes for all major, minor, 7th and many others.

Now, it seemed to me that the link had been removed, but perhaps it was there all the time and I missed it. Things like this happen at my age. So I apologize to the responders for asking for help when perhaps the link was there all the time.

The link to jazzmando.com above has a nice showing of 3 note chords with root, third and fifth in the bass. From there you can build whatever you want, 6 inversions total, using the 2 sets of 3 adjacent strings.

    Thanks, Bill,
Yes, that's a great layout of chord shapes. This will be a great reference for chord-melody arrangements.

One hint to finding more 3-note chords, in the Learn/Listen section do a search with the word “vamps.” It’s more contextual than catalog, using the chord positions for energy and drama in otherwise stagnant accompaniment. I gave several articles for Scott to archive here, similar to this one from my old site: http://jazzmando.com/tips/archives/001850.shtml

Thanks for the links, Ted. I have also found your FFcP exercises to be very helpful in strengthing the pinky and to be able to play in other keys much more easily. And, of course, in playing up higher on the fingerboard.
