Thread: Its All Over Now Baby Blue on Octave Mando

Default Its All Over Now Baby Blue on Octave Mando

Lately I’ve been working up more and more of my repertoire on the octave mando, switching songs from guitar and tenor banjo backup. It’s a stock Trinity College which I’ve beeen neglecting for years. Until last fall when I decided to go with octave pairs on the G and D. Gives it a great chimey sound, I find. The unison bass just sounded thuddy when played by me (as opposed to Donal Lunny et al who get something I don’t get...)

You can’t really go wrong with a Dylan classic, IMHO.... https://youtu.be/Bn6VebWidjg
    Key of D.

Thanks! I’ve been listening a lot to Andy Irvine, the master of melodic bouzouki accompaniment. In fact I recorded one of his songs recently on youtube, I’ll post the link shortly.

It’s always interesting figuring out what part of what fiddle tune to use as a break in these trad-type arrangements. In this case I came out with, sort of, the B part to the Irish tune “The Boy In the Gap” after the second verse. It’s also sometimes played at the end of “Jenny!s Welcome to Charlie”. I literally didn’t think of it until I started playing it. Hence the stunned facial expression at that moment.

As I threatened, here’s my version of Andy Irvine’s classic “O’Donaghue’s”. I got obsessed with this song, and the life it portrays, after seeing Andy perform it in Louisbourg NS last summer. I shortened it to ten verses!

Sample: Any afternoon you might find there
Luke Kelly’s banjo under Luke’s red hair
O what times what an atmosphere',
What more could a young man wish for?
How I’d spend my time was never in doubt
This is what life was all about
A bowl of soup and a pint of stout
Agus fáigamid siúid mar a tá sé (translation “and we will leave that as it is”)

If you like this, do seek out the original, it’s easily found on da Tube.Click image for larger version.
