Thread: Kentucky Octave Mandolin

    Default Kentucky Octave Mandolin

I had posted this in the Vintage Instrument forum and didn't get much response so I thought there might be more interest here. Last year I acquired an '84 Kentucky octave mandolin and asked in this forum if anyone had heard of another. No one had but I recently discovered another. It was custom made for Dave Grisman by Sumi and is currently owned by Lowell Levinger. Videos of Lowell playing his and my stepson, Charlie ONeal, plying mine can be found on YouTube. As an aside, after some research, it appears that these maybe the first F style octaves ever made. Any info on these or earlier F style octaves would be appreciated.

    Default Re: Kentucky Octave Mandolin

I found this 2+ years old thread while preparing to post a similar inquiry. I recently acquired a Made in Japan Kentucky F style octave mandolin model KM-8ve. This example has a 20" scale with an 85 prefix serial number, so thinking there were at least two batches of these assuming the OP (Roccus) instrument has an 84 prefix serial number. Any others out there?
