Thomas Buchanan 10 String , 5 course Mandolin / Mandola

Do you have one? Played one? know anything about them? What do they sell for? what is a used one worth? I see one that I might be interested in, but know nothing about them. Can you you help me?

Don’t have one, not played one for some years but I don’t think there’s much wrong with them if you’re looking for a flat topped instrument at a reasonable price. After all they are built in the town of Cleckheaton in god’s own county “Yorkshire”, UK!

thanks RAy(T), I will continue to consider the 10 string. As far as god's country, I've never been there, except for trhe wonderful books of James Herriot and the rural life of a veterniarian. I still lvoe those stories and books. I be Yorkshire is a wonderfull place.

Yorkshire is just over the hill (a pretty big hill!) from me. As they say in these parts - “You can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can’t tell him much!”.

I have owned three, and the most recent is Buchanan's best. He now offers one with standard tailpiece and floating bridge. I prefer the pin bridge model.

What strings are you using on your Buchanan these days!?

Phosphor bronze bulk purchase from JustStrings. On this mando I use .011, .015, .022, .034, .048. I can imagine a strong tone with beefier strings but I do not want any neck bowing.

A previous Buchanan had a stronger high range and sounded great with .009 and .014, the same gauges I use on electric. This one likes a bit of help for the E. Helps the string balance to the pickup, also.
