Thread: Another Ashokan and Turkey in the Straw

Default Another Ashokan and Turkey in the Straw

Pandemic plaid on plaid pajama practice on the good old Gibson. Oh, the things this instrument has seen in its 95 years. I'm the 2nd owner. I was told the original owner was known far and wide for his rousing version of Turkey in the Straw, which was a new hit when he did his weekly barn dances way back when. Always tickled to play it in his memory on his instrument.

Thanks much. Indeed, rare blonde, as I found out after it found me. Thought it was some sort of one-off or something changed with different parts but then found it's twin, 1 serial number away. Exact duplicate! http://www.mandolinarchive.com/gibson/serial/81100
Was told this is early 1925, post-Loar but still, the tone in the room is amazing. Wish I could put something up that wasn't recorded on a phone so you can hear.

Great playing there. That turkey was leaping!

Nice playing. Fantastic sound. Does your snake have a thin black line along the inner margin of the white top binding? It looks like it does. There has been a thread recently stating that the inner black binding is a feature only of A2Z mandos. I have a 1923 blacktop A model with the black inner binding, which sounds as good as yours (Great!); there is suspicion that some A2Zs got blacktop treatment because their tops were not attractive in a blonde finish. FON is 11999. What is your FON?

Doesn't have a black line. Just binding.Click image for larger version.

The 'black line' I referred to is also binding material on mine. Bad choice of words.

Yea, I looked as close as poss and didn't see anything like that. Interesting though, thinking a blonde finish isn't attractive. They have more fun too!
