Netflix has a bunch that I've enjoyed - Running Down a Dream (Tom Petty), The Other One (Bob Weir), Tricky Dick and the Man in Black, No Direction Home and Rolling Thunder (both Dylan), Twenty Feet from Stardom....
A couple more I can't remember the names of; one about Greenwich Village, one about Keith Richards, lots more. You watch one and they start recommending the rest to you.

Someone already mentioned it, but I really enjoyed Ken Burns' documentary series on Jazz. Also, a friend turned me on to this one: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314725/ - I've watched it about 5 times so far (WARNING: no mandolin content)

    A couple more:
High Lonesome: The Story of Bluegrass Music
Latcho Drom, AKA "Safe Jorney" (Gypsy music from Egypt to Spain; kinda stagey in places, but really astounding music)

“Two Trains Running”, is a fascinating documentary about Blues & the Civil Rights era. It is 2 stories, the search for Bluesmen, Skip James & Son House & the story of the murders of 3 civil Rights workers.
    Historic & relevant.

For folks in a hurry, here's a good ten-and-a-half minute video that my sweetheart just sent me:

"women in the blues piedmont style"

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP8X...XNSuhQMpAkx1wo

Robert Johnson's mother, describing blues musicians:
"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."

The first time I saw Latcho Drom was in sociology class back in the 90s. It had a tremendous influence on me - got me into flamenco guitar, which I studied for the subsequent 20 years..

Butch Robins' recollections and commentary on the history of bluegrass as he saw it and as heard from Bill Monroe. It is a series of five videos, produced by Radford University. Here's a link:

A documentary on Norwegian sisters Ragnhild and Eldbjřrg Hemsing on their quest to recreate the sound of Ole Bull Norway's most famous violinist / composer.
I really like the way their infectious enthusiasm comes over

Ooh, yes, I saw this a while back and have been looking for it to watch again and couldn't find it. Great film, thanks for posting.

I don't think I've seen High Lonesome listed yet. Also, Spout Wings and Fly about Tommy Jarrell.

Thanks for posting that, Beanzy. I really enjoyed watching it. But I couldn't figure out how to make it go fullscreen. Later, I went into the source code for this page and found the direct link to vimeo. This will allow viewing full screen. https://player.vimeo.com/video/18657...e=0&portrait=0

    Wow, some terrific suggestions here.

I didn't have time to read the whole thread, but the Mussel Shoals doc is an absolute must-see.

Great thread, I love a good music documentary. In these challenging times when it is more difficult to get out and play with others, it seems like an opportune time to indulge in some quality music documentaries.

I remember seeing this doc as a very young man, when it was on British TV around 1991ish on gypsy jazz called Django Legacy. This style of music seems to have become more popular since this documentary (particularly in North America), but I still think it makes for really interesting viewing. The quality of the video isn't great, and there is no mando content but I still really enjoyed re-watching this.

    Hi Dagger, hope you're well?

I completely agree about the TG4 documentaries. As well as the ones that you listed, I really enjoyed this one about the great pioneering Irish guitarist Arty McGlynn who sadly passed recently.

Who do you like? What's your interest? Turn on AXS channel - plenty of rock/country docs on there.

    Let's Get Lost (Chet Baker)
Latcho Drom (gypsy music across Europe)
Standing In The Shadows of Motown
The Art of Amalia (Portuguese fado icon Amalia Rodriguez)
    Bob Dylan: No Direction Home
    Crumb
    (Robert Crumb bio)
    The Howlin' Wolf Story
    Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser
    The Buena Vista Social Club
    Louie Bluey
    (Howard Armstrong)
Derailroaded: Inside the Mind of Larry "Wild Man" Fisher
    Jethro Tull: Their Authorized Story

You could also spend a month watching episodes from the 30+ years of American Masters (PBS):
Miles Davis, Coltrane, Muddy Waters, Louis Armstrong, Joni Mitchell, James Brown, Cab Calloway, Sam Cooke, Aaron Copland, The Doors, Ray Charles, Aretha, Marvin Gaye, Benny Goodman, Woody Guthrie, Merle Haggard, BB King, Hendrix, Billy Holliday, Lena Horne, John Fogerty, Janis, Carole King, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Sweet Honey In The Rock, Phil Ochs, Les Paul, Cole Porter, Lou Reed, Pete Seeger, Paul Simon, Sun Records, Rosetta Tharpe, Sarah Vaughan, Hank Williams, Neil Young, Bob Marley, John Hammond, Fats Domino, Patsy Cline, Nat King Cole, Joan Baez,

I've got a closet full of VHS tapes of this stuff.

Get on YouTube and there are BBC/UK documentaries on Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, The Albion Band, Richard Thompson, Ian Anderson, (If we weren't relegated to HughesNet and their data limits I'd watch a lot more of those)

Watched a good doc about Jefferson Airplane. (Did you know the Beatles' rooftop concert was a ripoff of something that the Airplane did for a Jean-Luc Goddard film three months earlier?)

And then there are all those docs, of various lengths, by filmmaker https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0087511/ Les Blank Cajun, Tex-Mex, Blues

    Hi Paul,

Nice to hear from you. Yes we're fine thanks.

I've seen most of those TG4 documentaries including Arty. To be honest, they're all worth watching. I decided to just give a sample of three.
There is a LOT in these excellent programmes.

Technically non-docs, but containing a lot of truth:

The Commitments (my all-time favourite music movie)

Inside Llewyn Davis. “I don’t see a lot of money here” (a phrase no folk music promoter has felt the need to explicitly state for at least 40 years)

    Actual docs:
The Ballad of Ramblin Jack (Ramblin’ Jack Elliot of course)

Silence at the Heart of Things (about the late composer/fiddler Oliver Schroer) https://www.moviemonday.ca/events/oliver_schroer.html
    2009 Eastman 505
    2011 Collings MTO GT
    2008 Toyota Sienna
    2018 Sawchyn mandola
