Default i think this would be such a cool tune to play on mandolin

I know nothing about fiddle, but from what I've heard, the fingering is the same as mandolin??

here is Cedric Watson playing Cochon De Lait alone, and then in a small group. I just think a mandolin could sound so good with this type tune.

Thanks, Daryl. It's a great tune.

The fiddle and mandolin are tuned the same, so the fingering is, in theory, the same, though going from one instrument to the others takes some getting used to, as fingers come in at a different angle. Cedric Watson's technique, "draggin' the bow" and using double stops, is very important to the Creole sound of the tune. It would sound quite different on mandolin, perhaps very good, but different.
(Of course, one can play double stops, two strings at once, on the mandolin, but with a different effect.)

Based on his finger and bowing, and his sound, I believe he may be tuned down a whole step to FCGD.

He seems to be playing an Eb with the first finger on the highest string, in half position.

I love it, but I spent a decade plus in Louisiana so I'm biased.

To clarify further, a major difference between violin and mandolin is that a fiddler can sustain a note or partial chord for a long time -- with good bow control, a fiddler can keep a note going for fifteen seconds or longer. With a hard pluck on the mandolin, we might keep a note going for a second. These are estimates. The usual method to keep a long note going on mandolin, as you may well know, is tremolo, basically a rapid series of short notes, which produces quite a different sound from the steady note on a fiddle. That being said, there were plenty of mandolins in the deep south -- certainly many southern blues musicians played them. I'd be surprised if mandolins bypassed this style of music (see: http://www.louisianafolklife.org/LT/...struments.html , and Mandolin Cafe thread: https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...Cajun-mandolin .

"Cook a pig in the ground." Thanks, Murphy. I wondered what "Cochon de Lait" (literally, "Pig of Milk")meant. I now assume that it refers to a recipe.

Well I love cajun fiddle (and accordion) - it's a blast to play bluesy dance music. It was my favorite fiddle style for years...until I got into nordic fiddle music - especially Norwegian hdgfl. There are some commonalities between these styles.

When I think of the difference between a violin and a fiddle, this type of music often comes to mind.

Octave mandolin would sound great in this style, has the sustain and range, but would need a number of hours of metronome work to get the ‘soul’.

Okay, what is that percussion instrument that looks like a metal vest? Very cool music, both versions.

    That's what I call a Zydeco Rubboard - it's a cajun washboard vest.

The late Al Berard, a Cajun multi-instrumentalist and all-around good guy, played a lot of traditional Louisiana music on mandolin. Never heard him do any Creole or Zydeco music per se, but it wouldn't surprise me if he did. Somewhere I've got recordings of a band that featured him on mostly mandolin, but I can't find it at the moment. There are some things with him on mandolin on this sampler video. Worth a listen.
