Peter Ostroushko's podcast

Peter Ostroushko recently put up on his website (scroll to bottom of home page) the first episode of a podcast about his work as a radio musician. The music is fantastic, but Peter's telling of his story is even better. It features early musical clips from A Prairie Home Companion, c. 1974. There's just one episode so far – I don't know when the next is coming.

Thank you for this post. Peter was my first mandolin inspiration in the late 80’s or early 90’s when we hung out in Elkins, WV at the Augusta Music Festival. He started my appreciation of the mandolin.
However, years later when listening to Garcia/Grisham that I was finally motivated to learn to play.
But it all started with Peter.

I am happy that Peter is getting active again. His stroke was quite severe and his recovery slow and difficult. His mandolin playing days are over. He can still use his right side and had been picking out tunes on a keyboard a little while back.

Thank you jelhai, for letting us know about Peter's podcast. It's great listening, and he now has a second episode up. I heard Peter play for years on the PHC show, almost from the beginning of the show. He is the reason I took up mandolin. I discovered the show by accident, while home from college and helping my mom with dinner, and she would always have the radio on. I didn't know what the show was at the time, but I loved the music and the stories and became a regular listener. I've been wondering how he was doing (I never thought to look for a website, duh!), and I'm so glad he is able to share his music and stories with us.

Peter's podcast reminded me just how strong the acoustic music scene was in the midwest in the 1970s. It extended into Iowa and Wisconsin with a lot of small and medium sized venues hosting, a lot of activity at festivals and really good top tier players. I am not sure about Minneapolis but elsewhere it is a shadow of that today.
There is a decent amount of support for the blues, particularly electric blues and always top 40 cover bands but everything else is weak.
