    In today's UK Observer a review of William Weaver's The lives of Lucian Freud: Fame 1968-2011 and his painting Large Interior W11 after Watteau, complete with mandolin:

    piggy-backing on this, since this, in a way, is a painting including a mandolin. It's the illustration for September for the Grateful Dead calendar we have hanging in the bedroom. I noticed the bottom right is a turtle with an F-model. it was a surprise to me! With apologies since it appears to be on its side.

    This hangs in my second bedroom/music room. Picasso's 'Girl With a Mandolin'. She plays better than me.

    This is my fave: Dali's "Portrait of Juan de Pareja Repairing a String of His Mandolin," 1960. The story of Juan de Pareja is an interesting one.

    I don't know whether Vincent played mandolin, but fellow artist Paul Gauguin certainly owned and played one.
