Default Ken Cartwright loses home in Oregon fires

Got a text a few minutes ago from a friend in Orgeon, then checked Ken's Facebook page. Very sorry to hear the news that he has lost his home in the Oregon fires.

Ken, for those of you that don't know him, is a long-time friend and supporter of the Cafe. Hasn't posted on the forum in awhile but has an occasional classified. During much of the run of Mandolin Magazine he authored a column on instrument repair, hence his handle, mandomedic.

Lets keep an eye out for any kind of financial support for him.

That’s awful for Ken, a very nice guy, friend to all musicians. Used to have a store in Stayton Oregon with a terrific CD selection, a big friend of bluegrass.

Sadly, there will be many, many more. That fire is over 300,000 acres, runs over 25 miles down the Santiam Valley. There’s at least 3 other major fires across the state, south, east and west.

We see smoke from 2 other fires rising over the hills out the back door.

Sorry to hear this, Ken is a good guy, met him at Mandofest 2005, I believe. I bought a nice mandolin from him years ago and remember his "Mandolin Tasting" CDs. Keep us posted if there is a way to help him out.

I believe he also had a radio program.

Best wishes to him. Ready and able to help if Ken needs it.

We are in Jacksonville, Oregon.. about 8 miles from the ALAMEDA FIRE in Ashland, Talent, Phoenix and Medford now moving to Eagle Point.

I am not a religious person, but if there was time to pray for those in the fire zone, this is it. It's bad.

    Indeed:

    https://www.kyacfm.org/about-us

It’s a mess out here and no end end sight. Beyond a severe, extended drought and the forests are stressed and incredibly dry. One of our major water reservoirs in central Oregon is currently at 12% of capacity. Some irrigation districts have shut off supplies to local farmers yet they they continue, somehow, to keep the golf courses watered excessively and thus artificially green...and more courses are proposed to be built. Go figure.

Joe, I remember Ken at MandoFest that year and gave him a ride back to the KC airport after the multi-day mandolin extravaganza (thanks, Scott!). We had a wonderful conversation en route. He also plays a stellar upright bass! Hoping for the best for Ken and all those impacted by these fires. I have many music friends in numerous cities around Oregon who have evacuated.

    More music, please!

Oh no. I visited Ken way back in 1999. The west coast of the USA is now getting exactly the same as we (Australia) had through last year and early this year. Worst drought on record so the forests were extremely dry. Then dry thunderstorms with lightening that started fires that grew into huge fires never known before. Rain forests that had never known fires in thousands of years were burned out. We had I think it was around 12 million hectares burned which is over 30 million acres so it was a lot bigger, but less population than in the USA, but around 3000 houses were burned down. We were lucky, surrounded by fires but none came closer then 15km.

It’s really crazy in Oregon. Entire small towns are being consumed by the fires. Entire counties are on evacuation alert.

When I was much younger I fought forest fires. There was never anything like this!

I have a 1920s Vega Style N tenor banjo with a Ken Cartwright-installed head. The first guitar I built, I bought the tuners from his shop. Very sad news.

I am very truly sorry for your loss. Wishing you and your family all the best.
My family went through a similar loss sixty years ago, and were blessed to all survive.
Hoping the healing has already begun.

So sorry to hear. Ken's a great guy who has done so much for the music community and others in the Pacific NW.

I was raised in Oregon, I still have friends and family there. It's pretty much awful there right now. I pray that all that are in the areas affected stay safe.

Sue, perhaps you could contact Scott and see if you can send a donation to the Cafe that’s to be passed on to Ken on FB?

Hoping that Glen Hill (Mountain Glen Harps) and his shop in Phoenix, OR make it through ok.

Sad to hear about Ken's place. He was active in the bluegrass scene for years throughout Oregon. Haven't seen him at any jams for years, but I haven't attended in years either.

I live in Southern Oregon within the fire chaos that is Oregon now. Many close friends have lost houses. A luthier friend of mine (not mandos) may have lost everything. Not sharing name or any other info until they can share publicly. Unfortunately, still might be some time before we know damage and loss.

Air quality is horrible. Visibility is very low. It's been snowing ash. Everyone I know is planning for evacuation if they haven't been evacuated left. Tough times.

catmandu2: I have heard from coworkers that Phoenix and Talent, OR have suffered greatly.

I’m not on Face(less)book either but I hear there is a “go fund” me page that may be set up for Ken and his wife. If it comes to fruition and I hear about it I’ll be sure and share it on the Cafe.

I'd ask we don't try route a donation by sending the Cafe funds via PayPal or any other method then asking us to donate on your behalf. The Cafe is a business which means we that pays taxes on anything that goes through PayPal. While I appreciate the sentiment I'd prefer to avoid having to figure out a way to handle that. In general I'd think it's not a good idea to route funds to anyone to ask they donate on your behalf.

So sad to hear. This situation is truly frightening; the air has been so swamped in smoke, yesterday, it was so dark with smoke it looked like twilight at lunchtime. We just can't catch a break this year - 2020 will be memorable for a long time to come.
