Default New double concerto for mandolin and mandola

Composition professor Brian St. John has shared to Facebook:
Hello everyone! I have composed a double concerto for mandolin, mandola, and strings that my college orchestra is going to premiere tonight [25 September 2020]. The concert will be live streamed on YouTube. 7:30 PM Central Time (USA). The concerto is the 3rd piece on the program and will begin closer to 8 PM. I'd appreciate it if you would check in and watch us on YouTube! (I'm cross-posting this to a few mando groups, so I apologize if it comes through your feed more than once!)

this is really cool. I wonder if the mandolin and mandola are miked to compete with the strings???

Also, I wonder if he could arrange it for CMSA en masse?

Just noticed this and gave it a listen. Very solid piece of music, well played under difficult conditions. And a very ambitious program for the orchestra. I enjoyed every minute. Thanks, Eugene!

I can't see any mic stands or cables (or much of anything else) on the video, but assume the soloists were somehow amplified, at least to monitors placed behind the orchestra. Otherwise I can't imagine the orchestra players (especially in the bass section) could have heard them.

I enjoyed that! I looked closely on a big monitor and I see a mic stand at the right knee of the mandolin and mandola. There is a speaker on the left just behind the violins and another on the right just behind the basses. There is a floor monitor pointed at the conductor just to her right.

Interesting - the second movement (~1hr 12'15") is an adaptation of the gorgeous piece "Spiral Moons" originally written for mandolin quartet by Tim Ware. Having performed this myself I can say that the original is a worthwhile piece to look up if you can find it!
