Thread: StarSun banjo

    Default StarSun banjo

I have read a little about these on B.H.O. I can not find any thing about what the scale, intervals, and tuning would have been other than not Western. Thanks, Maurice

Does that have actual frets? It looks like just fret markers when I zoomed in. Do you have a link to BHO post?

The frets have been removed and the slots filled in. This is how it was when we found it in the trash. Thanks, Maurice

It could be a modernized form of Thai grajappy or similar. Info on this page.

I will look further when I have more time.

Thank you Jim Garber . I spent some more time looking through the very cool ATLAS of Plucked Instruments and the grajappy appears to be the best match. I have converted it into a four string octave mandolin to Hang in our shed and take camping and boating. The good news is that I will not feel a bit bad keeping it out doors. Also good, If I wear a down vest and keep it pressed against that it produces a not too unpleasant haunting, growling, tone that sounds cool especially when playing with fingers in a minor key. The bad. If I play it with a pick, on my knee, with the back uncovered, it is quite obnoxious. Very loud with metallic, ringing overtones. Thank you for the help. I will keep looking for an example of what it might have sounded like as a grajappy before the frets were removed.

Update,This spent a harsh winter in the shed. We had a low of -7. I had to move the bridge a bit after the very cold days. It seems well suited for outdoors.
