Default Summer Suite, August, 2020 for Octave Mandolin or Mandocello

Just about a year ago I "published" my second short suite for big mandolins, the Spring Suite, which had been preceded by a Winter Suite. Recently I got around to making this new Summer Suite.

You can read all about it and find links to the sheet music and recordings of the octave mandolin version at my So Many Tunes blog:

    https://somanytunes.blogspot.com/202...or-octave.html

Here's the link to the OM sheet music:

Here's the link to the Mandocello version sheet music:

While these simple tunes are aimed at the larger mandolin family instruments they are also quite playable on standard mandolins as well. See what you think.

John, you keep making more work for me!
I will get these up and picking soon--Fabio has me working on selections from your Winter Suite. BIG (OK, semi-big... and virtual) plans for the CMSA convention. We'll have a workshop and Q&A with Fabio and I will host a Mandocello Hangout. I promised some new music, and now I will be adding word of your Summer Suite to the news. Let's talk soon--I want to be careful about respecting artists' ownership* and editorial control. So I will be offering sheet music on most of the material, but not sending out copies of anything that hasn't been approved. Thank you for adding to the growing body of music for this wonderful but neglected bass clef instrument.

*Totally unrelated to mandolin, but I am working on a paper about Solomon Linda of South Africa and his a cappella isychatamiya "Mbube" which got ripped off and sold as "Wimoweh/Lion Sleeps Tonight." I am quite serious about the music ownership, and talking with music educators about how music gets taken out of cultures, out of context, "American-ized" and sold. The way you and other composers put your music on the internet is a relatively new phenomenon, but I still want to respect the artist.

    Hi Jim,

I hope you enjoy this new piece. Please give my regards to Fabio. It was such a pleasure to meet him a year ago in Normal, IL.

Each of my compositions that I post on my So Many Tunes blog (unless otherwise noted) is published with my copyright on the sheet music and its use is intended to be covered by the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 license linked on the upper right hand box of every blog post. So I retain full copyright ownership but I authorize, in advance, non-commercial distribution of the music as long as proper attribution is given to me. In addition, I am a member of ASCAP and they occasionally send me money for live performances and on-air use of my music.

This works well for me and I've rarely had an issue with someone improperly using my work. It's always nice to be notified when someone uses something and additionally nice when someone makes a donation through my Mandotopia website but I never have felt that anyone was trying to cheat or take advantage of me. The mandolin world is an oasis populated by some of the best people in the world. (All praise once more time to Scott Tichenor for creating and managing this very special part of the mandolin world.)

Even though attendees pay a registration fee for the convention and you receive a very modest honorarium for giving a workshop, I would absolutely consider handouts at a CMSA workshop to be non-commercial use of this music.

I understand that the professional musicians among us, who are actually trying to make a living of some kind with the mandolin, might need to be a little more particular about their intellectual property and I totally support that. I'm just saying that this works best for me.

I should be clear also that the publishers I work with (currently Mel Bay and Trekel) manage their own copyrights of the books and mandolin orchestra pieces that I have signed contracts for with them. These publishers do us a great service and we should try hard to keep them in business.

I remember well how difficult it was to come across any kind of classical mandolin music before the mid-1990s and I had access to some of the finest research libraries in the world. So while the jury may still out on the value of the Internet as a whole (dis-information, porn, hate, etc.), and particularly the Web's effect on the livelihood of actual musicians, there is no question, IMHO, that it has been a great boon to music lovers in general. We just need to find a better way to compensate creative artists before it's too late.

Thanks again for your mandocello advocacy work!

Thank you very much for the new Summer Suite, John!

I've just finished an initial read-through on mandocello, and like its two predecessors it's great fun to play. I still need to get my head around the timing of the first movement -- struggling to fit the semiquaver clusters into the pulse of the piece -- but the phrasing and bass harmonies are delightful. The other movements are rhythmically more straightforward although I don't think I'll get the final movement up to the notated 115bpm.

    Thanks again!

    Martin
