Well, I don't like autotragic transmissions or European or American built cars, but that wouldn't stop me from buying one if it was a good deal.
The bottom line is this, even if I "don't like" a given mandolin, I still like it a lot better than something that's not a mandolin. And a bad day playing mandolin is still better than a good day at work

Oh ok. I wonder if you happen across a good deal, will it change your tastes? Enjoy the ride

I had a Saab - late '70s. For a brief spell I had both. Saab got wrecked first in Denver, the Volvo got me to Seattle. Back then I only had my Kay. I did know about white-face Gibsons; however. Never knew I'd stumble onto one; however. And, love it too!

I've sold two f-models - a Muth and a Stanley. Too flamboyant for me! and I'm too fiscally conservative. (Hence, getting the last miles out of cars!)

No, but I'm just practical enough to realize that I don't always have to like everything about something for it to work, and if it gets the job done and the price is right your tastes can go suck a lemon.
Also I have noticed that you generally learn to like or at least tolerate things you never thought you would if you just live with it for a while. I imagine if I had an F style mandolin within a few weeks it would not be unpleasant to hold anymore, and a few more weeks and I'd probably prefer it. But as it is, I prefer A style mandolins, and that's what I hope to get when I upgrade. This topic was basically meant to start some discussion, and it definitely has done that

Keeping this in mind will serve you well in your life, and I wish more people would apply this thought process...

As long as we grow artichokes in this country I know there will not be a food shortage.

My question was does anyone else dislike Fs because they are uncomfortable to hold?

As to round versus F hole, I like F holes way better
I prefer F style with Tone-gard and the more bling the better, I find the F just as comfortable to hold as my A style.

I scanned through this post because I couldn't remember if I had commented on it tor not... It doesn't look like I have, so here are my thoughts... not relative to cars or artichokes...

My experiences playing F mandos has been much less favorable than playing A's. In other words, I have played a lot more A's that I have liked than F's; so on the whole, my preference is the A model, but it has always been a matter of tone rather than anything else. I can probably count 4 that I have played and liked:

    1. A Gilchrist F Jr that someone at a Jam let me play for a little... once I realized it was a Gil, I became intimidated and handed it back for fear of handling so expensive a piece of instrumentation,... but it was awesome!
    2. I was at Gruhn's a couple of years back and had the opportunity to sit with Mr Gruhn and play a couple of his Lloyd Loar signed F5's... C'mon, who doesn't like a Loar!
    3. I was once pleasantly surprised by a Kentucky KM750 that someone handed me to try at a Jam... go figure
    4. Just 2 days ago while driving back to the Metro Atlanta area from Saint Simons Island I took the opportunity to stop into Randy Wood's place just outside Savannah and play a couple of his Mando's and was very very pleased the one F style that I played.

So what's the point? More often when I play F's their tone doesn't appeal to me as it does when I play an A. That has made me mildly discriminatory against them, so my preference is an A. Also it is worth saying that aside from the one Kentucky, the F style mandos that have appealed to me have been from 5 to 100 times the budget of my one main player which I love (which is an A).

As time passes, I prefer As more and more. I'm not really sure why. They just seem less fussy. I have some nice Fs, too, but my Collings A is the mandolin I play the most.

Mike you have some mighty fine A ovals there. Do they get played as much as the Collings?
