Thread: Anyone know what the old flatirons were finished with?

Default Anyone know what the old flatirons were finished with?

I have a 93 2mc army navy style flatiron. Just noticed a bit of the finish on the neck flaked up and chipped off. I must have gotten something on it, no idea what. Does anyone know what these were finished with? I’d like to try to patch it. It’s a high gloss, hard finish.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure they were still using Fullerplast in those days. It's a catalyzed varnish, and CA will work to patch it. It doesn't make a perfect repair but it works.

CA might be the best thing for you to use anyway, but the typical way to test the finish is to remove a tuner and dab an acetone-dampened swab in the footprint. A cross-linked finish won't be affected.

Just noticed on this instrument today that there are lots of cracks visible in the finish of the top itself. I’ve seen that before on one of their mandolas. Looks like the finish is just very brittle. I don’t imagine it’s either harmful or fixable, but thought I’d mention in case anyone has thoughts.
