Thanks for all the input. Looking forward to checking out your recommendations. The $164.36 was not a typo, that was sarcasm Meaning, I only want to spend $164.36 but I know I'll be in for $1K before this is all said and done.

I’ve bought a number of used flattops in the last several years in the $400-500 range, although prices do seem to be rising based on the pair of Flatirons listed lately by Elderly. The only flattop on which I’ve spent considerably more is the custom order I placed with Andy Poe, in my opinion the modern master of the Army-Navy style.

Don't forget to check out Crystal Forest Mandolins. Also really good quality 1N/ Army Navy style mandos... I used his plans for soliver #001.
As to how they sound... well it's just different... Flat top mandos don't have the decay or percussive (I call it pointy) sound that arch tops... it's more resonant and "round."

Looks nice, I'll have to check into it. Thanks for the input. How does it differ from the F5S[/QUOTE]
It is very different. Best I can describe is the Beavertail sound kind of blooms out and rings together. The unwound strings are punchy and bright while the bass strings are deep and tubby sounding. The F5S is a more direct focused sound with clear treble and more of a growl in the bass. Hope that helps.
