Default Poll for Song A Week Social Group Week #535

This poll is for the Song A Week Social Group Week #535.

One vote per member of the social group. Please feel free to link to videos of these tunes, as a reply to this discussion, to help others decide!

If you are a regular member, you know that our polls have been weekly polls, for years, but that over the last few months I've been experimenting with changing that. Our poll will be a biweekly poll. Hopefully, that interval will be enough to keep your interest, and also give you enough time to learn it. I will try to announce the winner sometime shortly after Friday, November 20, in the Song A Week Social Group forum. I am going to be traveling on that day!

If you are not yet a member, there's a link at the bottom of this post that will take you there! Please join us over there!

Ginny and the teepee is probably my favourite, mainly because of the energy and slides that the guy in the vid gives it.
I think I need to learn some of those techniques. Can’t find any TAB though...
But I voted for Drive the Cold Winter Away in solidarity with the older generation.

So the Older Generation are going to vote for Eoin?
-that’s a great tune, I really like the way he jumps up a fourth every now and then.

As maybe the oldest of the older generation I have just gone for Waltz of the White Lilies - just my sort of tune!

Well done John. Nice to see a close race.
I would have guessed that ‘Drive the Cold Winter Away’ would be the favourite, being an English Country Dance and therefore quite similar to a Bluegrass tune...

I played through all the "Waltz of the White Lillies" settings at The Session so you don't have to.

    Much appreciated Mike, thanks.
I’m wondering why you’ve posted this though, seeing as Drive the Cold Winter Away is the one that’s going to win?

It appeared to be running away with victory, Simon, with a crushing 4 votes. Now I see that my preferred tune, Drive the Cold Winter Away, has made it a tie. This may end up going to the Supreme Court, along with the US presidential election, to determine a winner. I intend to do my patriotic duty and post a video of whichever candidate wins.

I've been working on "Lillies" while hoping for a come-from-behind victory on one of the other tunes. This waltz has no detectible groove I can find in the opening measures. Anybody have a suggestion on detecting something like a rhythm?

    Drum machine it, Mike.
    Nail it with decibels.

I have commented on how I managed it over on the SAW group, Mike. Set metronome at 94 and in 3/4 time and recorded melody, then added backing tracks with metronome turned off.

Good advice as usual from Mr. Kelly.

I wonder if this tune could be played as a Slow Air.
-but my metronome wont go that way.

Something on my ‘To Learn’ wishlist.

The slow air! One genre where the metronome should certainly be locked securely in the drawer before you start, I believe. The advantage of our Scottish slow airs, especially the ones from the Gaelic culture, is that they very often have words, and this can be your way in to the phrasing of them. For composers like James Scott Skinner, the Gows and others you are generally relying on the music itself, as fiddle compositions generally had no lyics, though of course lyrics might be added by others later.

Interestingly, Simon, our many Strathspey and Reel Societies and other large fiddle ensembles will tend to play slow airs in much stricter time than a solo player, as the orchestra format requires that all players play together!

There’s nothing quite like an inspiring Slow Air.
We have slow airs south of the border too, with words or lyrics.
    This one was beautiful.
