Default Adrian Gross - Maiden's Prayer

    Hey Folks!

Here's Maiden’s Prayer, with John David Williams on button accordion.

This is a favourite jam tune of mine, especially since slow numbers that aren't waltzes are a bit of a bluegrass rarity. But western swing is a great place to find these tunes, and this one was pioneered by Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys, who originally played it quite up-tempo before slowing it down in later years.

One of my favourite versions is on the record "The Grass is Greener" by Richard Greene, a real gem of an instrumental bluegrass album with great mando playing by Kenny Blackwell, and the always amazing David Grier and Bill Keith. They call their version "The Virgin's Lament," and add an extra section towards the end with the changes "III7 vi-7 II7 I" - the exact same chords that happen at the end of the standard "After You've Gone." Theirs is the only version I can find like this, and those are pretty unique chords, particularly the II going right back to the I without a V, so I wonder if Greene was listening to that standard when he decided to tack it on here? Either way, it works like a charm.

Thanks for listening and let me know what ya think! I've been checking out the cafe for years but this is my first real post, and I'll be adding videos here regularly, so thanks for tuning in.

    Adrian

Outstanding Adrian! It's one of my favs too. We do it in A. Beautiful setting as well. Not sure where you are, Canada I assume but there are places along the Guadalupe River in Texas that look just like that. Good job.

    Thanks Adrian,

one of my favourite tunes ever, that I play when picking up any new mandolin in the last thirty years or so, but you certainly included a lot of melodic ideas I never thought of!

    Just lovely.

    And terrific accordion too.

Very nice, thanks for posting! I too love the version on the Grass is Greener album. The playing, energy and arrangements on that album are top notch.

I thought my version of that tune was the best ever. You certainly destroyed that myth! So well done. I look forward to hearing more of your music. Thanks for sharing!
