Thread: Mandolin stands

Ok, so in full disclosure I help Solid Ground with some of their marketing... but that’s only because I like their stands so much. I ran into Mark and his team at summer NAMM last year, and soon after had him build me a guitar and mando stand.

I really love the look and fit of these stands for home and workshop use... here is my Ellis taking a break from practice this morning.

I wish the Hercules double/triple stands could adjust for each instrument. A mandolin and larger instruments must all use the same settings. You end up kind of compromising to get them all to work. Other than that, I love those stands.

Ya’ll are just asking for it. Haha. Of course, a stand may represent a deeper subconscious desire for a new mandolin. Nothing wrong with that but why wreck one to get another? Seems a waste.

I got a 19 scale mandola, a mandolin, and a 23.5 scale octave to work at once on my Hercules triple stand. They're solid imo. Not much vibe but they do the job.

I get that some would prefer the Cooperstand for its compact size and ease of carrying but I'm clumsy and one slight bump could cause my mandolin come crashing to the ground. A safer and slightly larger option for me is the Hercules violin stand. I also play fiddle too so it has a dual use for me.

I use Ingles stands when I need onstage stands. Cases aren't always an option, and there are not people moving around on the stage.

These stands are great! They hold your mandolin and it's not hanging there, it's fully rested and secured. I tripped over the stand with my mandolin in it once and it didn't go over.

I’ve been using one of these for many years to hold both my fiddle and mando for practices and performances and have been very pleased with it.

Got a Hercules stand yesterday for my Kentucky 5 string. Now I can leave it out, setup and don’t have to go through the setup/cable hassles. Anything to make it easier fun.

I've been happy with the Ultimate GS-200. It folds up and is easy to pack AND it holds the mandolin (or guitar) high enough you won't trip over it.

Ahem. Inasmuch as several people recommended the Hercules, it took a looong time for someone to post a photo to show one. (Thanks, Jim.) It took me minute after minute of googling to find them, time I shall never, ever get back. The triple stand was particularly evasive, but thanks to the link Ray(T) posted, I got to see that. Here for everyone's easy perusal:

    Attachment 191675 Attachment 191676 Attachment 191677

As has been noted, the first one, which I assume is what people have been mentioning, is actually their violin stand. They don't seem to make a dedicated mandolin stand. The third one, their TravLite model, resembles the short stature and foam coverings of my stand.

I found mine in a music store in Philadelphia (I think) a quarter century ago. It bears the brand name "Ultimate." I believe it too was intended for violins - even though it seems rather wide for that instrument.

That thick steel tubing is good and sturdy. I also like the judicious use of foam rubber at the right spots. It folds down nicely, and the red knob locks the legs in place in both configurations. The bottom of the mandolin just grazes the floor. I know it doesn't have a neck clip, one drawback. The other is its short stature does not leave room for a cord. This 1935 A-00 doesn't have one, but my teens plain As have endpin jacks for a 1/4" cord. When I had a cord with a working right-angle plug, that wasn't an issue. But a straight plug is too long to use the stand.

That said, I don't use it at gigs much, preferring to leave my mandolin in the case between sets. It's one more thing to schlep. But when I was in a band that played so frenetically that I tended to break strings mid-set, and replacing and tuning took too long, I solved this problem by buying a second similar mandolin. I would leave the spare in the stand, and if I needed to swap out, would plug in only the one in use at the time. (A mute button on the DI permitted noiseless switching.)

I don't know if this company is still around. Searching on the interweb didn't turn it up. (Common search terms such as "ultimate" prove troublesome.) I don't think it's the same company Billy Packard mentioned. I'm not necessarily recommending it, but I've had very little if any problems with it. Indeed, one of my ex-roommates seemed to like it, leaving a guitar in it most of the time. If I ever decide to step up, it might be to the Hercules triple, though it might be too flimsy for what I have in mind - mandolin, mandola, steel tenor guitar. That last one is one heavy axe, especially compared to the other two. The triple is also pretty pricy.

Speaking of price - the Elderly microphone stand hanger Dave Bradford posted can't be beat. Plus the convenience of having your instrument right there can't be beat.

Here is a pic of my two Hercules stands. A two station and a three station. I like these a lot because they are relatively secure. You can find them on Amazon, just search Hercules guitar stand. They are adjustable to fit mandos. Yes more to hump around though. I gotta remember to do these in landscape.

I had the same problem with orientation. I forget the correct procedure to fix this, but I found that reducing the original image size considerably did the trick. I used Paint - simple but effective, and I don't have PhotoShop - reducing the size to a quarter. I don't know why it worked, but it did. My cell phone camera produces images of either 4 or 8 MB. Way too big, AFAIC.

And the downloaded images of Hercules stands I posted worked last night.

Just ordered a Hercules uke stand (UKS 100B). Quite a bit smaller than the guitar version especially with the smaller tripod footprint making easier placement up off the floor on window benches and counters and stuff. Foldable and pretty compact for travel and sized well for mandolins. Price tag is currently about $35. Looking forward to seeing how this works out.

I have that same stand, but in the guitar version. It still works well with the mando and even tho I only use it if I am at someplace like an opera house, I like the larger foot print for stability. Every place else the case or on my shoulder is the safe place.

I use the cheapo guitar stands that suspend the mandolin. The mandolin hangs straight down so the body of the instrument doesn't touch anything. Easy peasy.Click image for larger version.
