I might be wrong but it sounds more as if he is riffing on a generic chord progression. Because Mike is so musical he can riff beautifully on anything.

Tennessee Waltz. Or did you mean the Bach piece? Suite #1 in G major

That was really great. There are a couple of other nice mandolin versions of Tennessee Waltz on youtube.

    Here is Sierra Hull:

And here is Chris Thile and some great guitar by Chris Eldridge (starts baroque, but heads into Tennessee Waltz around 45 seconds in):

...and actually played in 'Waltz' time.

I didn't notice! I guess when you noodle your way into a tune, that can happen.

I study with Emory Lester, longtime friend and associate of Mike’s. I asked about this tune some time back. Emory wasn’t quite sure, so sent Mike an email which he forwarded to me with Mike’s reply. Mike does in fact state that he just pulled that together on the spot. He also said that he’d had a few folks ask him about it, and that maybe he should tab it out.

Maybe we should start the campaign right here! Let’s get Mike to write that out for us!!

Sounds like Mike is riffing on this 4/4 version of the Tennessee “Waltz”. Channeling Joe Pass?
