Original: Pogues + Kirsty MacColl from 1987 in case you aren't familiar.

One of my favorites. It's nice to see these two do a version.

That's my kind of Christmas music. Give me the Pogues.

To take out that verse totally changes the meaning of the song. That's as bad as the Frank Sinatra rewrite of "Have yourself a merry little Christmas".

The original, and still the best.

I fully agree. BTW in the Pogue's video the cop is Matt Dillon.

Apparently there is no "NYPD choir." Supposedly posed a problem making the original video.

If you've an hour or so to spare, there's an interesting BBC documentary on the making, and re-recording, of the Pogues' song:

Another victim of political correctness. With these two, it had the chance to be an exceptional cover, but ended up a cop-out.

OK, nice mandolin playing as always, but what's with the Hanukkah menorah next to the Christmas tree? A Pogues cover by two people named Christopher and Aoife is just about the least Jewish thing that could come out of New York !

Not a gripe, just a joke.

But did anybody actually watch the livestream? Is the rest of the show any good?

I love Thile and Aiofe but this version is too pretty. The original isn't pretty. The New York City he wrote it about is long gone. I'll take the Shane version any day. I heard a friend who covers this dropped the homophobic epithet for something just as coarse and that works. Dropping the feeling of that line and the bite behind it diminishes the song.
