Thread: NMD Collings MT2-0 (Pictures and a Christmas Tune)

  1. #1

Default NMD Collings MT2-0 (Pictures and a Christmas Tune)

I almost sold my Northfield NF5S (also pictured) to move into a higher end model. But it's a good mandolin. Kind of hard to move on from.

Instead I got a good deal (I think) on a 2009 Collings MT2-0. It provides a different tone from the Northfield. Seems to have noticeably more projection and volume than most of the oval hole mandolins I've played while keeping that nice bass response and rich harmonics. That Collings maple never disappoints.

So....Is it better to have a Northfield NF5S AND a Collings MT2-0 for variety or should I just have went with a Big Mon special or an Italian Spruce and Birdseye MT2 and had 1 mandolin for everything?

Well, I don't know but for now I'm happy! The two Mandos make good sisters

Chuck, totally get your reasoning, that's what I'm going through, keep both the Weber and Collings or just go with one or the other. The Big Mon is a different beast. The one I played was really nice. Definitely not just a bluegrass machine. But a huge sounding instrument, that day it sounded as good as any instrument in the room and that included Joe's Clark and Bob's LaPlant.

That MT2 is something special. I was in the shop when it showed up. As you probably know, the wood on it is even nicer in person. If I hadn't been set so much on this MT it would have called me. Even now I wonder if I made the right choice.

Your MT2-O is a great sounding one. Pretty sure if it was between that and my MT yours would win.

Congrats, and thanks for sharing that beautiful playing. I think the Collings oval holes are a thing unto themselves, so I get why you'd want to keep them both.

I really enjoy your rendition of O Holy Night (I also admire your new mandolin!). Would you happen to have tablature for this song or could you tell me where you learned it? So far I am only playing basic notes of a song and I would like to learn to embellish the tunes I'm learning. Thank you!

That's a Banjo Ben Clark version. He stressed to make it your own so it's certainly not note for note but I started with his version. He's a great teacher and his website is very user friendly. NFI

I think so too. Collings just seems to have an inexhaustible stash of killer maple.

I haven't actually seen the MT-2V at Willies American Guitars in person. Just over the web. Certainly looks like all the mando anyone would ever need!

I realized that this morning. Was mixing up the regular MT-2 with the quilted back and sides and the varnish one with birdseye. Haven't seen that one in person either.

They both look amazing! That said you get Varnish finish, Waverly tuners, a bound pickguard, and that beautiful upgraded (and no longer made) Collings case with the MT2V. Well worth the $900 bucks I think. Of course the sound is the most important. I would love to play them both but that's probably not smart right now

Wow, beautiful mandolin! I have a reg MT and have often wished I’d have opted for the oval version. But then I’d be wondering about the reg MT. Where does it end?!
